Is Clipping an amp always Audioable?
Too much power, clean or not, is *very* likely to damage a speaker. Distortion might mean extra energy pushed to the tweeters, but it's the energy, not the distortion, that does the damage.
What is DTS and how different from SACD 5.1/DVD-A
DTS is just another flavor of audio for DVDs--that is, video DVDs. Like Dolby Digital (and MP3s), it uses lossy compression (i.e., low resolution). These days, I think most AV receivers can read both DTS and DD soundtracks, so you're covered.DVD-A...
Is Clipping an amp always Audioable?
I should amend my answer: Clipping sounds like s**t if there's enough of it to hear. But, as Gs rightly points out, the occasional clipped peak isn't a problem at all. One study I know of found that clipping becomes audible if it occurs more than ...
Is Clipping an amp always Audioable?
I presume by "audioable" you mean "audible." 1. Yes, clipping sounds like s**t.2. It is possible for an amp to damage your speakers without actually clipping. It is also possible for an amp to clip without damaging your speakers. The point at whic...
Why do only US makers focus on time coherency?
Why don't you just forget about speaker design, listen to a bunch of stuff, and decide what you like? There is no best speaker design, just the best speaker for you and your room.
help me find quality classic jazz?
Gee, when I think Evans, I don't think fast at all. My favorite is Waltz for Debbie.Another idea: Ketih Jarrett, The Melody At Night With You. It's second-tier Jarrett if you're a Jarrett fan, but might be right up your alley.
help me find quality classic jazz?
Hmmm. You want jazz made between 1930 and 1950, but you don't want Swing, Big Band, or Bebop. What's left?Seriously, the suggestions above are good ones. I'd encourage you to push the envelope a little. Try some small-group swing, like Benny Goodm...
volume setting for ipod mini hooked to integrated
Um, what sounds best to you???In general, you don't want to overdrive either iPod or amp, so I'd start somewhere in the middle, then experiment raising one or the other. There's probably a good-sized range where it doesn't really matter, and as lo...
Why do only US makers focus on time coherency?
If you were to close your eyes at a live concert, you'd be surprised at how hard it is to pinpoint the position of instruments/voices. With your eyes open, however, it's quite easy. (A lot of things are easier with your eyes open.) Good imaging at...
Advice on Setting Up A Laptop-Based Audio System?
If you have no interest in wireless, then Airport Express is just an alternative connection to USB, or audio out to powered speakers. I'm not sure one is any better than the others, though I don't have enough first-hand experience with this yet. B...
Douglas Self on Negative feedback and distortion
Why make an amp like that? Because somebody will buy it. Why else?
Why do only US makers focus on time coherency?
Most of the research I've seen (admittedly not much), suggests that phase coherence is not audibly significant except in extreme cases. That's not to say this is a settled issue, but it would explain the tendency of many companies to deploy their ...
Power Cord Burn-In
Well of course it can't be correlated to measurements, since it happens inside your head. But you can't enjoy what you can't hear.Actually, that's not true. You CAN enjoy what you can't hear. But in that case, your enjoyment is coming from somethi...
Advice on Setting Up A Laptop-Based Audio System?
Assuming you already have an Airport card in your Pbook, I'd invest in the new Airport Express, which has a pretty good DAC inside it, by all accounts.
Power Cord Burn-In
You don't need to model "all facets of the musical experience and its impact on the human emotion" in order to model the effect a cable has on the signal passing through it. Of course, once you know the effect the cable has on the signal, you also...
