Amazing XRCD I just purchased....
I would guess that the manufacturing differences would be very slight. CDs aren't like LPs, where the kind of vinyl you use and the care you take can make a major difference in the sound. (Which is why foreign pressings of LPs often sound much bet...
Amazing XRCD I just purchased....
As far as I've been able to tell, the K2s and XRCDs are using the same masters, so they ought to sound very similar. I think the distinction is mostly a marketing one. K2s you can find in any music store, and they are priced for the masses. XRCDs ...
What is the standard for judging a systems sound?
You have nailed the paradox. There is no such thing as "the sound of a flute." There is only "the sound of this flute, played by this flutist, in this room." And, getting your listening room to sound even close to any other room on the planet is a...
What is your price range for used vinyl?
Well, it depends. I don't go out and buy gallons of stuff just to try it out; I'm usually looking for particular recordings, or at least particular artists. So I tend to prefer shops that actually sort their records--and I pay for that service. Ev...
Confused by Dynaudio specs.
And don't forget the most basic rule about specs: They're meaningless.
Digital vs. Analog sonics
Yes, the CD could be produced that poorly. So could the LP. There's a lot of mediocre recordings out there. But the way you're comparing them opens up far more logical possibilities, including speed variation. You should definitely check your turn...
Your Favorite, Most Outstanding Guitar Solo
Mike Bloomfield, "East West" (off Paul Butterfield Blues Band's "East West")Duane Allman, "Loan Me a Dime" (off "Boz Scaggs")
Analog a dying breed
Speaking as someone who actually purchased a turntable today (a cheap Technics for my dad for Xmas), I'd say your dealer is half-right. Most of what's keeping turntable manufacturers going these days is boomers (and older, like my dad) who have re...
Best way to burn I-Tunes/Mac
IMPORT: There's a trade-off between file size and quality. AIFF (and WAV) are CD-quality, but a full CD will chew up 700-800MB of hard drive space. MP3 (or AAC, if you have the newer versions) are compressed, so they can take up as little as a ten...
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart...RIP
"It is a sobering thought," Tom Lehrer once said, "that when Mozart was my age, he had been dead for two years."
Hiss and Hum in a system newly put together
Before we start looking for culprits outside the system, maybe we ought to look for culprits inside the system. First, is the noise in both channels or only one? If only one, it's pretty easy to figure out the component that's causing the problem ...
What are the Ohm ratings? newbie
Whoa--don't confuse continuous power with "dynamic" power. They are very different things--and neither is terribly meaningful, frankly, the first because music isn't continuous and the second because there's no standard definition for it.I'd say t...
Looking for a guide to best classical recordings
I have three books recommending classical recordings. They almost never agree. There is no such thing as a definitive recording, and there's no one right way to play Beethoven. So don't get hung up on looking for the "best." Instead, buy cheap and...
Digital as good or better than YOUR analog?
The attributes you're describing are really more a function of recording quality than playback technology. With that in mind, I can say that the best recordings I own are all CDs, most notably XRCDs and Cheskys. There were some really great record...
equal cable length?
Good point, Hosedragger. What this means is that you should choose a cable that's adequate (i.e., low enough in resistance) for the longer length. If you choose a thinner cable than that, you might suffer some rolloff in highs in the longer length.
