Great Vintage Amps-which one for you?
My primary preamp is a Counterpoint SA-11, which I like a lot.
Which Pre/Pro regardless of $$$
Yes, the Theta is a very good unit. So is the top-of-the-line Lexicon, although I wasn't too impressed with one of the lower models.
older LPs - different EQ?
chiefslave1: which phono preamps do this? Looking at the FM Acoustics web site shows two phono stages, but neither of them seem to claim anything about various equalization curves. Am I looking in the right place?
Which Pre/Pro regardless of $$$
You should at least audition the Classe SSP-60. I have an SSP-75 and I don't have the harshness problem Cytocycle mentioned. The -75 is very good at sonics, and reportedly the -60 is in the same league - on the other hand the -60, being a much new...
Worth upgrading from Classe cap 101 to cap151 ???
Not that you necessarily want to feed the insanity, but here are a couple of more things to think about:- The CA-200/300/400 family are quite similar to the 201/301/401, but slightly older. They are excellent pieces too, and generally cost somewha...
repairability of amps from the late 80's and 90's
It's true that some amps use MOSFETs that are simply no longer available, period. It's also true that most of Counterpoint's hybrid tube/transistor power amps used these things, too; as a result, if the output stages fail, they can't be repaired i...
Worth upgrading from Classe cap 101 to cap151 ???
The CA-201/301/401 are pure power amplifiers, you'll need a line stage too. (They're 200/300/400 wpc, in case that's not obvious.) My suggestion is that the next step is to buy one of the heavy-duty power amps and use the CP-101 integrated's line ...
Worth upgrading from Classe cap 101 to cap151 ???
I'm not familiar with the sound of the 101 or 151, although I'm a relatively heavy Classe user (SSP-75, CA-200, CDP-.5).It all boils down to what you'd be tryimg to achieve in the upgrade. The big differences that I can see between the two in ques...
Bi-Amp Power Rating
Yes, bi-wiring is a necessary but not sufficient condition for bi-amping.To amplify on kr4's answer (no pun intended):If you biamp a speaker with two 200wpc amps, you could theoretically be sending 400w into one speaker. But it's pretty rare to dr...
Triad speakers, Platinums or Gold?
I have only had experience with Silvers - I think my dealer only carried them and the new Bronze. I've found that the Silver surrounds are really good, and their primary defect (to my ears) is a rolloff in the high treble. In my application this d...
pioneer elite DV09 or DV47ai
Prices on used DVD players (as well as pre/pros) fall very drastically as new technology is introduced. Although the DV47 is a very nice player (I've got one), I'd definitely opt for a used one to save a lot of money. I think I saw a DV09 last yea...
Martin Logan vs. Thiel
In the worst cases, you get clipping and/or muddy bass. (Probably that muddy bass *is* clipping, but maybe clipping in that sound region sounds muddy.) Clipped treble or upper midrange is particularly offensive, at least to me. Other times you'll ...
Martin Logan vs. Thiel
MLs are not easy, and in fact I'd call them one of the more difficult loads around, especially the older models. The older CLS full-range panel dipped under 1 ohm for some significant fraction of its range, a load that drives most amps insane. For ...
Surround processor recommendations
I know you said new, but right now I think the only thing I'd be less inclined to buy new than a prepro is a projector. The depreciation curves of these two types of kit are very, very steep - far more so than for other things in which there is le...
HT gets more and more complicated.
Although I do nearly always prefer the DTS sound track to the DD track, it's typically not available. It may be that there are more DTS available now and increasingly in the future, but I'd say that when I go to the video store, the ratio is proba...
