Speaker break in?
Totem recommends break-in at low to moderate levels. I guess if the surrounds were too stiff you might damage the bond between the surround and woofer frame. Take it easy at first, but it would probably take some real abuse to damage a woofer.
Speaker break in?
Its easy to accept that speakers take some time to break in with all the mechanical parts that move and stretch and I have had new speakers that went from horrible to wonderful. It can take over a month.More suprising is that electronics can chang...
Tweeter Dome Puncture
If its just a pinhole it probably does not effect the sound. Make sure there are no hard to see cracks if it is a meddle dome. If you cant hear it dont worry about it. Point it out and maybe you can get a better price.
The Hives:Real Deal or just a tease???
There does seem to be a movement back to 70s rock style. Some of us (new) old farts were talking about what our kids are listening to. Sounds like they are not just listening to the new music with the old sound but they are discovering the old stu...
David Bowie-Heathen
Good, good and good, but not great. Im sorry to say for me it just dosnt have the magic of his old stuff. The Man Who Sold the World, Space Oddity, Diamond Dogs, Ziggy Stardust all had songs that had an energy that just grabbed me. They call this ...
Why do DIY products have less value ?
Fear of low resale value, catch 22, no? The speakers and preamp I am listening to are both available as a kit, parts quality and sound are far beyond what I have heard for the money at shops. If you are careful (lucky) its like getting the top of ...
What causes "cupped hands"?
Could it be a speaker/amp problem? How powerful are the Fox DT amps? The 7B is listed 86db with a 4ohm min. Some speakers require a lot of current and can sound "closed in" or "cupped" with less muscular amps. Have you tryed other electronics?
New Dynaudio C series candidates for ugliest list.
Gotta wonder what they are thinking. Its not like the dont have the resources to develope visually pleasing designs or they are hardcore "only the sound matters" designs. I would probably have Totem Hawks right now if they didnt have those ugly "C...
Preamp-Tonearm Grounding Problems?
Had a similar problem solved by running a ground wire from the arm base to the preamp. Dont know much about star grounding, but try this, it cant hurt anything. Good luck.
Cowboy Junkie Fans
Nobody ever mentions "Black Eyed Man", one of my favorite cds to listen to when I feel layed back and want to hear something not so demanding. Their music has an "authentic" feel and the lyrics are often very clever. I understand why someone might...
Ribbon Tweeters
Could it be that a tweeter with a range that extends beyond 20khz sounds more detailed and extended because it is working more comfortably within its range and not being affected by the mechanical limitations of the diaphragm. I would think that i...
Marsh Amps
The Marsh A200s is 120wpc, the 200wpc Marsh is the A400s and has been listed for as little as $1400. Both are a steal on the used market. I have compared my A200s to some very nice stuff and it really holds its own. It sounds powerful and has a ve...
rotel rb 991 &rc 1070 vs a higher end integrated.
You may miss the power you have with the Rotel combo depending on the speakers you use. As an alternative you might want to try a different preamp with the 991, it can sound much better.
TO DAC OR NOT TO DAC?
Twl answered some of my questions, thanks. Although the MF DAC is closer to 1k, adding a dac also requires finding the right cable and if a jitter reduction device is added, thats two cables and a lot of electronics added to your chain. If the MF ...
What is the best DB level to
It depends a lot on your system. One of the greatest shortcomings of almost all systems is an inability to produce the "dynamic swings" from low - moderate levels to high. A SPL meter might be handy, but use your ears. You may want to hear "Jurasi...
