Audible Illusions L-1 vs. Modulus L-1
They are the same creatures. There have been little updates in the L-1 since its introduction but the basic unit has not changed. It has the same circuitry as the line stage of the M3A. I currently use a 1995 model. I should have my new L-2 within...
upgrading from McCormack DNA-1 to.....?
I agree with Kr4, it is not the amp. I would look at cables, the preamp or speaker setup first. The Mccormack does an excellent job with ML's.
Vandersteen model differences/power requirements
The 1 series is a nice speaker, especially for the money and in a smaller room. The difference between the 1b and 1c is not night and day but I would go with the 1c. It is slightly better. The 2 series is Vandersteen's most popular model and is def...
Recommended preamp for McCormack DNA-125??
The L-1 preamp I mentioned above can be set for gain at any level you like. There are 2 gain controls that feed the master volume control. The Audible M3A does not have these and I think is the one Steve is refering to. I did use a M3A with a coup...
Intergrated Amp and CDP for vandersteen 1c
Buy you a couple of used NAD components. Try the C370 integrated and the 512 CDP. You would be surprised the sound you can achieve for low bucks. They're one of each listed currently. I would consider both a really "Bang for the buck" item.
Recommended preamp for McCormack DNA-125??
The Audible Illusions L-1 is an excellent pre for any McCormack amp. It adds a touch of warmth to what is a slightly lean sounding amp. They do form a synergy that is hard to beat. Audible has introduced the L-2, which is a remote version of the L...
amp upgrade
I owned both a while back with the Creek replacing the Bryston. I never did warm up to the Bryston. I thought it was rather dry sounding and added a little bit of roughness (or of the "sh" sound) around voices. I enjoyed the Creek much better. It ...
My impression of VPI Scout
Kinda comparing apples and oranges. You need the same system and same cartridge on each so a determination can be made on each turntables characteristics reguarding the individual sound. Otherwise, you don't know what you're hearing---cartridge di...
Whats the tubiest sounding preap?
CJ fits the bill.
CAL Icon vs. Cambridge D500SE vs. DAC
I vote for the Cal---BUT---I'd look for one with the HDCD decoding and Power Boss upgrade. One well built player. But---another but!---it is not as transparent as the Cal CL15 or some of the newer players in this price range. I owned the Cal Icon,...
Suggested speakers to take the place of Dunlavy
Rowland, This is why speaker decisions are so based on individual preferences. I don't find Vandersteen's recessed in the highs just as you don't hear the slight box sound of Dunlavy's . They are all good speakers deserving of their reputations. I...
Calling all analog experts
Jsonic, I feel it is better than the RB300-600 and on par with the 900(if not better.)( Of course, I've read numerous articles that have said the RB250 w/ Incognito wiring is better than the other Rega arms-who knows-can't try everything) I don't ...
Audible Illusions vs. Audio Research?
The Audible Illusions preamps(L-1, M3A or new L-2) form a synergy with the McCormack equipment and offer excellent sound. M3A has phono, other two do not. However, the new L-2 does offer a factory phono board as an option and is remote control whi...
Suggested speakers to take the place of Dunlavy
In Richard Hardesty's "Audioperfectionist Journal" he reviewed the Dunlavy, Vandersteen and Thiel speakers. He ultimately chose the Vandersteen 3A Signatures with a pair of 2Wq subs. He also gave reasons why. All of the above are time aligned and ...

The VPI Aries Scout is a heck of a table at $1600. It comes with the JMW 9 tone arm. Pick one of the various phono cartridges that give the sound you like and you've got it.
