Price Increases
"The challenge is to find, say, the $10K speaker that sounds like those $100K "high-end" ones", That all depends on the speaker. For example, take a look at the Vandersteen Model 5 speaker. I think the website or an old mag review shows the constr...
Replace 12AU7 with 6SN7 ?
Simply replacing 12AU7s by 6SN7s would double the filament current drawn (3.6 amps vs 1.8 amps for 6 tubes). That could easily burn out the power transformer if its rating is marginal. The above statement is correct. Unless you can measure this you...
Which component is most responsible?
I think my Polk LSI15’s are limiting me in achieving distinct separation of voices in a chorus. FWIW, separation of voices in a chorus is very difficult to achieve UNLESS it is in the recording in the first place! From my experience both of these ...
Advice on selecting a tube amp
First figure out what tube you like by auditioning different amps, el34, kt-88s etc. then you have to find one that matches the impedance of you source. Then each year buy and sell your old one on Audiogon and buy a new one from Audiogon and keep ...

Would new speakers----
Funny, this weekend I just put an old pair of Vandersteen model 5's in my system. I always thought that overall Vandersteen speakers were musical but lacked air, defined bass, and they never seemed that involving when I heard them at local dealers...
Hidiamond vs Hifidelity interconnects
PAz307,So can you describe the difference in the AT versus the HD cables? Which model of the HD are you using, what versions did you try? Last what version of the HD ICs would begin to offer better sound compared to the AT ICs?
popping noise
tube gear - could be a tube going bad or older capacitors going bad.
Most Quiet TUBE Preamp. Linestage. $ 12K or less
J,Yeah still modifying Counterpoint gear, about two units are sent to me each week. I am able to rebuild the old amps without the high price of the new boards. I will probably advertise modifications for the preamps soon, that take them to a diffe...
gold plated RCA plug: brass or pure copper chassis
Each plug will have it's own sound. In general, copper will produce a warmer sound, IMO it can also limit the upper frequencies. Gold platting is usually necessary because copper by itself will probably corrode. Best to try and see what you prefer...
Hidiamond vs Hifidelity interconnects
Thanks Paz307. Your description is helpful. I will hook up with HiFiAl and see what I hear in my system. I use Audio Tekne interconnects which are Litz design, 500 copper strands. They really dig deep in to the music especially in the mids but lac...
Most Quiet TUBE Preamp. Linestage. $ 12K or less
Audiolabyrinth,I actually make a DHT transformer coupled preamp. Killer sound, nothing I have compared it to comes close. It's in last stages of fine tuning that includes tube voltage regulation that so far in the test unit has made the preamp dea...
Most Quiet TUBE Preamp. Linestage. $ 12K or less
The preamp that I make is the quietest and best sounding!Happy Listening.
Power Cords: A Skeptic Looking to Dabble...
IMO you can change the sound of your system for much less by installing filter chokes in your components (CDP, Preamp) and by changing a few resistors. My current system uses belden molded end power cords and Walmart extension cable for speaker wi...
