Is it speakers or my rock/metal music? Plus help ?
Interesting OP Nobleknight. Ironically, because I struggle with chronic upgraditis, Revel Studio 2 speakers are on my bucket list, together with Focal Electra 1038 Be IIs and Magico S5s. The common denominator being BERYLLIUM tweeters. My current ...
Best Tube Amp/Preamp combination with Quad 2805s
Thanks Ralph. Your explanation is pretty clear. Just curious -- while ESLs behave like a giant capaciter, do they also have capacitive negative phase angles? Also, as I asked above, does the amp/ESL match again come back to what the designer had i...
Best Tube Amp/Preamp combination with Quad 2805s
Ralph, this comment is obviously coming over a year since the last post. Nevertheless, if you catch my comment, perhaps you could respond to my question. You mentioned that the Quad ESLs have impedance curves that vary a lot as a function of frequ...
New KT150 tubes?
Anyone have anything to report on pricing. I heard and/or read that pricing could be double that of KT-120s.
Biasing tubes/tube gear
I think it's a good idea to periodically check tube bias to ensure that the tubes still function. Further, as Ryriken says, if a tube amp does not self-bias, occasional adjustments are required. Maybe because I'm OCD or just bored, I check tube bi...
Shirley Temple Black
Just caught the news. Another Baby Boomer chapter closing. Sigh. Me too Mapman -- I'm a Philly boy too and I also remember UHF channels 17, 29 and 48. That's why I love our hobby. It takes me back to earlier times -- life was sooo much slower then.
Why speaker lines come and go
Djcxxx ... excellent question. The Harmans, Paradigms and Focals have large low-end/lo-fi product offerings that presumably generate enough revenue to absorb a goodly portion of their fixed cost burdens. I've read on a number of other audiophile w...
the 27 or 05
Well Pryso, ... I'm confused by the posts above. Don't know much about the Cary pre. But, it has been said that the ARC LS27 nips at the heels of the Ref 5 (not SE version) and ARC says it sounds better than the venerable Ref 3. Ultimately the cho...
advice on dedicated line
Excellent post Jim. Thanks. That's exactly where I'm heading. I may go for 2 or 3 dedicated Romex circuits. A 15 amp job for my CDP. A 15 or 20 amp line for just the amp, although I suspect 15 amps would be major overkill since the amp pulls about...
VPI Direct Drive Turntable
Thanks Matt for your thoughtful post. I wish you, your Dad, the whole family the best. Been there and seen what you and your family have gone through with cancer. It's tough on everyone. Hatzlachah on your new management role at VPI. Ask Mike or J...
The last 6 feet - is it important?
Very interesting Willie. Thanks. Notably, the IACS rating of alloys, even copper alloys, "goes south" pretty quickly. But the various grades of "pure" copper were still very high. I buy your point that interposing an alloy interconnector, or as so...
VPI Direct Drive Turntable
I've stayed out of this dog fight because I have no intention of dipping a toe into "$30,000 turntable waters" under any circumstances -- period. Nor am I interested in whether MDF/Aluminum is better or worse than steel reinforced poured concrete ...
The last 6 feet - is it important?
Wille ... what is IACS conductivity? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
The last 6 feet - is it important?
Willie ... I've posted this Q on another thread, but I'll ask you here. I use Kimber 8PR speaker cables. Seems like you think there IS a difference between the PR and TC series. Correct?? Just a tad curious why that is so given the cables specs re...
advice on dedicated line
Uuuuhhm, maybe the most effectice "surge protector" for my amp is to simply pull the plug when not in use, and not to use my stereo during storms. The other gear is surge protected, if such devices even work.
