Why does the VPI motor thump
Ok ... I pulled my VPI Classic out of the trash and against my better judgment turned on the TT with the rig set at full volume -- no mute -- to see if there was a thump on turn-on. No thump. Oh well ... guess I'll keep this pile of junk for a lit...
How do you determine how much to spend on speakers
P.S. -- if you really want to focus on the downstream side of the house, then we should be talking about the spotty quality of the source material, which is the subject of many other Forum threads. After all "garbage in-garbage out."
Why does the VPI motor thump
You're so right Liz. I just tossed my turntable in the trash.

Al and others .... I read the last few posts and would like to add my 2 cents. But before I post my comments, I'd like to paraphrase a couple of funny lines from Fiddler on the Roof. I think Tevya was caught up in an argument between two other vil...
Why does the VPI motor thump
But Zavato ... why aren't folks using the mute button to protect their systems from such transients??
Your favorite musical non fatiguing speakers?
A while back, a member posted a comment that the human ear has some type of autoprotect response to high SPLs. This has happened to me when I play highly compressed rock music at very loud levels for an extended period of time. It takes a couple o...
Why does the VPI motor thump
I mute my phono pre before turning on the TT, so I have no idea if my TT would "thump" if my phono pre was not muted. More importantly, ... I have no intention of "testing" my set up to see what would happen if I didn't mute the phono pre. Why wou...
Upgrade Tonearm for VPI Aries 3
Glad to hear Abill. The JMW arm can do a good job if it's set up properly. But to get to that point .... Anyway, goodluck and happy listening.
What was your first 'hi-end' system?
Back in early 1970s -- Crown IC-150 preamp; Crown DC 300 amp; Infinity 2000a speakers with ESL tweets; Thorens TD 160 Mk II table and $80 Ortofon cartridge; hardware store lamp wire for the amp/speaker connects. This was a good system in the day. ...
Adding a SACD player
Stan (Stringreen) ... please pull some of threads on this topic. I agree with you last post. As of late, I have been buying so called "hi-rez" redbook CD, e.g., "Gold" quality, and have been quite surprised by just how satisfying a musical experie...
Upgrade Tonearm for VPI Aries 3
FWIW ... I own a tricked-out Classic 1/2 plinth with a Classic 3 tonearm/base. I agree with everything Stan (Stringreen) said about checking the arm. My VTA, VTF and azimuth are pretty stable. I check every couple of months when bored. No changes....
Dynavector 20xH - Boring Presentation?
Livin, I've done the DV20X2 H. Pull my threads and you'll catch some of my comments. Between you, me and the wall, I had the same reaction as you. I recall switching the DV out for the Soundsmith VPI Zephyr, which IMO, sounded better. However, I'v...
Loudspeaker dispersion-
Johnnyb53, I've read elsewhere the same comment about the relationship between the diameter of a driver's diaphram and the wavelength at which the driver will start to beam. Just thinking out loud here .... Most tweeters have 1 inch domes or diaph...
Rega RP8 cartridge?
I've owned the Clearaudio Maestro and Virtuoso, the Ortofon 2M Black, the Soundsmith Zephyr, and most recently the Lyra Delos and Kleos. More detailed reactions are posted here and there in various Forum posts. The primary reason for me jumping ar...
Audio Research Vs115
Gerald, for some reason ARC recommends using their parts, e.g., bias resisters. I don't know why. They only charge a buck so per resister. Selling "matched" resisters can't be a big profit center. So, I would order the resisters from ARC. As to tu...
