Info from those familiar with Audio Research
Excellent advice from Lostbears. I agree, unless the OP wants to step up to separate components. If the OP goes the later route, a Ref 5 SE and Ref Phone 2 SE is a step-up, but the combo will cost some serious bucks ... even if bought preowned.
Experiences buying used cartridges
I've bought and sold pre-owned cartridges on Audiogon many times. Never had a bad experience. Of course, I check member feedback pretty carefully. My current cartridge is a pre-owned Lyra Kleos, ... which I bought lightly used a while ago. Still wo...
Revel Tweeter - Is Dimpling Cosmetic or Functional
Red68 ... Why not just call Revel customer tech support and ask them. You can take a cell phone pic and send it along in an e-mail.I surmise that if Revel recommends replacing the driver, you might be able to do it yourself. Is the C32 tweeter bery...
Audio Research Reference 5SE reliability
Misternice ... No. All of my ARC gear, including my Ref 5 SE works A-OK.
Love / Hate relationship with vinyl?
Louis, my TT is a hot rodded Classic "2.5." IOW, It's a standard Classic, but with a (i) Classic 3 stainless steal wand and tone arm base, and a (ii) Classic 3 motor (300rpm). That's it. I have no hum problems. And, as an fyi, I didn't have a hum ...
ARC VT-50 Damage/Repair Advice
Jim, yup, got the same problem with my bias pots. It appears that my ARC amp uses the same type of blue bias pots for the power tubes as those in the pics you kindly provided. At least they look the same.I've gotten used to accepting close but not...

ARC VT-50 Damage/Repair Advice
Wow Jim. Just looked at the close up pic showing the Phillips screw and the bias resister contacts. Small wonder the OP shorted his amp. You need 4 hands to bias that old clunker. My ARC amp has multi-meter probe sockets. Avoids (or at least mitig...
Love / Hate relationship with vinyl?
Louis ... I use a Lyra Kleos too, which I really like a whole lot. Been there and done it with an Ortofon 2M Black and Soundsmith Zephyr. IMO, the Kleos is much better. My electronics are an ARC phono pre (58 db gain) and linestage(12 db gain), wh...
ARC VT-50 Damage/Repair Advice
Zd542 ... no, I am not positive about the time line of the VT-50 production run in light of Jim's (Jea48) post.My post was based on the ARCDB website: http://www.arcdb.ws/VT50/VT50.html Ordinarily, I find the ARCDB website to be very accurate. Tha...
Is DEQX a game changer?
Andrew (Drewan77) ... when dealing with an artifact in the signal path, it's hard to get below zero when it comes to impact on the signal integrity. Not quibbling, but it is quite remarkable to me how little impact there is when sending a signal t...
ARC VT-50 Damage/Repair Advice
Agree with Lostbears' posts. Just checked the ARCDB website. The VT50 production run started in 1998 and ended in 2002. Not sure when your VT50 came off the line, but it's got to be at least 13 + years old. That said, 13 years is not a super long ...
Is DEQX a game changer?
Al, your experience and comments about the sound difference between the DEQX DAC as compared to your Bryston CDP are consistent with my experience. I thought my DEQX PreMATE was a "squeak" better than my ARC CD-8 CDP, but just a bit. I too am surp...
Is DEQX a game changer?
Al and I already traded PMs about his progress. For the benefit of others, I mentioned in PMs to Al that room correction will take him across the goal line. I also surmise that Al may find that he like a different room correction adjustment for ea...
arc ref3 phono stage
Confirm Dweller ... Ref 3 is a linestage. If vinyl is your thing, you'll have to buy a separate phono pre. Ditto CDP and DAC.
