Do Tube Amps go better with QUAD 2805's Speakers?? Gary, that was my recollection from the "old" days. The Quads were sweet, but couldn't be pushed too hard or else. I don't know about the newer models either. I play a lot of rock, pop, jazz and classical. Right now I am playing Dvorak's 9th Symph...
What is the best Reel To Reel machine ever built? Hey R2R mavens, got a question. Just checked eBay and saw there a number of Crown R2Rs: (1) a Crown 800 and (2) Crown SX-724. Both drive only 1/4" tape. Are these good units? Is 1/4" tape the tape of choice, as compared to something wider?
VPI Classic hum Vinyl ..lover, both the DV and Zepher are shielded and I haven't noticed hum from either carty. I would circle back to your dealer. He should know what to do. But if you get stuck, try a Dynavector or SS VPI Zephyr.Good luck.
How do you know when to replace a tube? Elevick makes a fair comment. I agree with the adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Sure, check the cartridge alignment. However, I do caution that if the power tubes are old, they are susceptible to failure, which in some cases could take out...
CONUNDRUM Elevick, the PH-7, if modified by ARC, has 6 tubes: (4) 6922 tubes in the gain circuit; and (1) 6H30 tube and (1) 5881 tube in the PS. I don't think your idea has legs.Handymann, the Koetsu is a very expensive cartridge, most models are in excess ...
CONUNDRUM Second Swampwalker and Jcarr, but I would still ask ARC and Tom, FWIW.
What is the best Reel To Reel machine ever built? Thucan, is it stll possible to pick up a like new rehabbed Crown or Tandberg R2R? If so where?? Here on S'gon or eBay??
How do you know when to replace a tube? Sumhull, As a threshold matter, I assume that the rest of your components are matched well and are in good working order. Just focusing on the tubes, 50 hours by itself is nothing. The real question is how many hours are on the tubes from prior us...
CONUNDRUM Al, I got us off topic, but I'll close the "capacitance" loop fast. Thanks for the info on the Zephyr. To my untrained journeyman ears, the Zephyr souns great, cables and all. I thought the Maestro did too. Something to be said for ignorance -- if...
Do Tube Amps go better with QUAD 2805's Speakers?? Hifigeek (Gary) -- As you may recall, I own an ARC VS--115 (w/KT-120 tubes). Would the VS-115 match well with the Quads? Also, how loud can they be safely driven? Some music like Classical has a varying dynamic range, possibly as much as 20-25db. ...
CONUNDRUM Thanks Al. BTW you may have picked up on something about the Maestro that that I d/n focus on when I fiddled with it on my VPI Classic. As I reported in many posts to the point of ad nauseum, I had a bass ringing/resonance that Mike at VPI and I c...
CONUNDRUM Spencer, As I have already mentioned 3 times, I own the PH-7 and owned at one time the Maestro. By itself, the PH-7 has no problem with the Maestro. The real problem here is that the PH-7 is overloading the line stage and the PH-7 does not provide...
CONUNDRUM Addendum: Tom Tutay is very solid. I used him to build a very custom impedance buffer that summed L/R channels and corrected an asymetrical loading problem. That's about as "custom" as it gets. I reiterate my suggestion to call him. Perhaps other ...
CONUNDRUM Handymann, I think I already responded to another OP that you started about this issue. As previously mentioned, I own an ARC PH-7 and Ref 5. Jfrech's advice is ok, but the PH-7's gain output cannot be adjusted. There are no switches or knobs to d...
Is 60dB gain enough for Kleos? What Al says makes sense. My phono pre is an ARC PH-7 which has 57.5 db of gain. The noise and hum stat is 70db. My line-stage is an ARC Ref-5 which has 12 db of gain if the XLR output is used, which it is in my case. The noise and hum stat is 109... |
