Great sounding smallish DAC, balanced output, $3K Apogee Mini-Dac is less than $1,000, very small, very versatile, supports high sample rates, had balanced outputs, a good headphone amp, and sounds very good to me.
Is there a truly musical multiple CD player? I second the Anthem CD-1; I found mine very musical and satisfying.
Good Sound Quality From 10 Inch Records? Have you tried a mono cartridge? I use an Ortofon Mono SPU with a .1 mil conical stylus--it seems to work pretty well.
Is there a truly musical multiple CD player? Another oldie but goodie: the Anthem CD-1 from Sonic Frontiers
whats a good older hdcd cd player? I've had an Anthem CD-1 for ten years; I think it sounds good. I too think HDCD is an improvement. Perhaps that one reason didn't catch on was that it started life as a proprietary process, not an open system. I know that the Sonic Solutions maste...
cheap used transport vs cheaper cdp w/ digital out Look for a used broadcast cdp; I found Denon DN c-680 on eBay for $88--it sells new for $1,000, it's built like a tank, and has coax and xlr digital outs.
DAC w/2 analog out + digital pass thru? The Apogee Mini-Dac (and probably other pro audio DAC's like the Benchmark and the Lavry Black) can do this. The Apogee has one xlr (balalnced) and two mini-plug single ended outputs. I use a mini-plug to rca cable with no obvious ill effect.
"Original Jazz Classics" I do know that the Concord Music Group laid off (or otherwise dispensed of the services of) Stuart Kremsky as tape archivist and re-issue producer at Fantasy. Stuart is a big time record collector and self-described "jazz nut" (as well as reviewer...
Micro Fiber Cloth for Record Cleaning I like the super soft long pile grey ones at Target sold as automobile detailing cloths; they really get the grunge out of the grooves. Check out the thread about steam cleaning; I now use a cheap steam cleaner and these cloths to wipe and dry. Ea...
Deep Cleaning Records With Steam? I just bought the Perfection steam cleaner at Walgreens. Since I was impatient, I tried it with filtered water on some records I didn't care about. Just blasted them with the steam and wiped with a nice thick microfiber auto detailing cloth from T...
"Glue Cleaning" Your LP's Has anyone tried this glue process with the older style 45 RPM records (the harder styrene kind?) I have stacks of rather dirty but potentially very valuable r'and b' 45's . . .
USB DAC better than a Scott Nixon? How about an Apogee Mini-Dac with USB? I don't use the USB, but as a DAC it sounds good and is very versitile for either a pro-audio or home use.
What are the treasures in your vinyl library? The Skatalites "LATIN GOES SKA" on Treasure Isle Records. I paid $0.50 many years ago; it may be "worth" $500, but I love it for its utter charm."Korea Blues/Everynight About This Time", Fats Domino on Imperial blue label. One of the Fatman's firs...
How good can a mono cartridge be...? I think you can get good performance for not too much money. I use a Denon DL-102 mono cartridge on an Audio Technica ATP-12 arm; total cost of about $350. There is much info on line about the Denon cartridge (and as always a variety of opinions);...
One TT, 2 arms, 2 cartridges for $2,000 used? I have a Technics SP10MKII with SME 3012SeriesII and Audio Technica ATP-12 arrms, and Denon DL-103R and Denon DL-102 (mono) cartridges. All but the cartridges were purchased used, and the total price was $1,350. Of course I had to make my own plin... |
