similar to the improvements in beetlemania's 2.4 upgrade. Two years later, I remain of the opinion that these are my last speakers. Compared to the very be$$$t speakers/systems I’ve heard, the list of faults is short:1) no audible output below ~3...
Thiel CS1.6 Has anyone ever substituted a new woofer for the original?
Is that $500 what Rob Gillum would charge? That does seem steep. But it seems a tall order to take an off-the-shelf woofer and replace Thiel’s in-house driver. Namely, that opens a can of worms around the crossover. I think you have to bite the bu...
Ayre AX5 Twenty
The original AX-5 was a fine amp. The Twenty version sounds even better (it’s in my top 5 ever heard) while being much more tolerant of difficult speakers. Anyone looking at the AX-5 should either get the Twenty version or plan to have an original...
Ayre AX5 Twenty
Here are measurements for the Ayre AX-5 Twenty. https://www.hifinews.com/content/ayre-ax-5-twenty-integrated-amplifier-lab-reportThat’s plenty of power for all but a handful of speakers and preferences. Of course, it’s always best to listen in you...
The Most "Analog" CD Player?
Oh my word...I guess some posters never opened the op's linkLOL. Gotta say most manufacturers don’t give you a 12” transport in their CDP.

@thoft I think V-1s were in the range $8-9k when new, depending on the version. So you might find one for about $4k or less? I think Ayre stopped making them shortly after the MX-R was introduced ~15 years ago. But I’ll bet they will still upgrade...

@jafant I thought you already had a Twenty version?

I have bragged about those yellow caps as state of the art, and they were in their dayOh, no! Time to remove the radiator again? Lol I do occasionally wonder about different bypass caps on the CSA coax feeds. We went with Multicaps but, in hindsig...

Ayre power amps are also a great match with Thiel100My AX-5 Twenty and CS2.4s are singing. Years ago I ran a pair of CS1.6 with the AX-7. Also nice other than I yearned for more bass. And my only experience with the CS7.2 was paired with, I think,...
New DAC, Ayre QX-5 vs Moon 680D, suggestions?
Yes, QB-9 has a single USB input. I had mine upgraded to the Twenty version and am super happy, no longer trying to figure out how to afford a QX-5. I use Roon via a NUC to stream Qobuz and play my collection. The only time I wish for a second inp...
Speakers for Ayre AX-7e
Small footprint with bass is a tall order! I had an AX-7 for about 15 years. Drove three speakers with them: B&W DM12 monitors, Thiel CS1.6, Vandersteen 2Ce Sig II. Thiels and Vandies are far better than those old B&Ws. The Thiels probably...

If ultra low distortion is so important for SQ why isn’t Halcro widely regarded as the best ever?
DAC's Made in the USA
If you want the best sounding DAC, near your price, get an Ayre Codex. It is the only boy thing they have made in China, but then, it is thousands cheaper than their better gear, and worlds better than Schiit (any flavor)!I am one million percent ...
Owners of Vandersteen 2CE & Ayre Ax7e...
I ran an AX-7e into 2Ce Sig IIs for about 7 years. My room is about 18x19 with vaulted ceiling and two large openings on rear wall. I was super happy. I would describe the sound as neutral and detailed. One caution is that the AX-7 is not a good m...

For those of you with electrolytics in your Thiel crossover (is that all of you except me?), you might watch this new “pints with Ayre” episode:https://youtu.be/gr9u6-ifUXkAround the 22 minute mark, their engineer describes EL lifespan as affected...
