Excellent point, @imhififan  During my build, I stopped at several points to compare changes. I always allowed 100-200 hours before critical listening.

@improvedsound My L5 inductor (ie, the one on the coax board, paralleled with 28 uF cap and 2 ohm resistor) is Erse FoilQ, 16 gauge, 0.15 mH. I have all Mills MRA12s, the 30 ohm position I used paralleled 60.2 ohms for improved cooling. The bi...

@improvedsound Assuming all values match OEM and the connections are consistent with the schematic, that board should be singing. From your images, I see nothing out of place although I can’t see everything. Total resistance of the coax board shou...

@improvedsound  That looks really nice! Great job. Curious what brand/model is the 0.1uF bypass?  I would have elected to also use CSA for those 100uF shunt caps but I know those are very large and expensive. That way you get away from electrolyt...

From Rob Gillum: “The [Cs2.4] crossover can be accessed through the passive radiator opening. The base is not removable, as it is screwed, and glued. To access the crossover, you must remove the passive radiator screws and let the passive radiato...

@pieper1973 The thought of putting Dueland caps into CS2.4 is wild to me. Even if Dueland makes the proper capacitance values (I don’t see anything close at Parts Connexion), the price would staggering. Multiples of the original price of the ful...

@jafant Yes, the planned run was 150 pairs but Tom Thiel shared with me that Rob Gillum reported closer to 100 pairs sold. That Mr. Gillum still had SE kits when he started CSS seems to corroborate less than the full planned production. Still, I t...

Another review of the Ayre P-5
How hot does the Ayre EX-8 2.0 Integrated Amplifier get?
Yes, you can leave an Ayre amp powered all the time. It doesn't hurt anything other than your wallet when the power bill arrives. Sleep mode saves power without powering completely off. I put my AX-5 in sleep mode most nights and I unplug it if I'...
Ayre KX-5 preamp with V-3 amp
Oh, wow, might as well just use all that John Curl designed gear! Charles Hansen used to publicly acknowledge Curl’s influence on his circuit design, they were quite friendly on some of the forums. Could be interesting to compare the K5-xe and JC-2.
Ayre KX-5 preamp with V-3 amp
If you want to stay with Ayre, sensible given your other gear. I would reach to their newer products. The V-5 is a clear step up from the V-3. The K5xe is a great pre but, mated to a V-3, it might not be any better than the AX7e integrated which y...

I prefer the sonics of my 2.4s with the outrigger/spikes. But I am uncertain how much of the difference is because of the extra 2-3” height versus coupling to the floor (rug over tile/slab).
Thiel Owners
@jafant No, I’ve not played with fuse upgrades. I read an account of improved sonics by doing this with an Ayre product. Most everything makes at least some difference in sonics. I asked Ayre about this and decided the potential upside was not wor...

@jcatral14 I hope you can audition the Sophia before committing. I’ve not heard the Sophia but I have heard W/P 7, W/P 8, Sasha, and Maxx. I’ve also not heard the 3.6 but have owned the 1.6 and 2.4 plus heard 3.7 and 7.2. IMO, Wilsons are good but...
How hot does the Ayre EX-8 2.0 Integrated Amplifier get?
Why doesn't it have one, I wonder?Charles Hansen used to write on these forums: “Performance, features, price. Pick any two.” The AX-5, IMO, gives you nearly all the sound of SOTA separates but at a relatively affordable price point. I think most ...
