What is your favorite 1 hit wonder from the 70's?
By the way, the Rockpile line-up was in place to record starting with Dave's Tracks on Wax 4 album and Nick's Labour of Lust (which is MUCH different than his first, definitely showing Dave's influence on Nick), both from '78, IIRC.

I'm about to move up to Portlandia from SoCal. Is Positive Feedback, being Portland-based, involved in any local activities? Based on a couple of encounters I've had with David Robinson at Hi-Fi Shows, he doesn't seem to be a real friendly or plea...
It Was 40 Years Ago Today...
My opinion about the Tele and Blues is just as I stated: "A Telecaster isn't known as a Blues guitar"..."yet in the hands of the right player can be excellent". For playing Blues, a Telecaster is certainly not the first, or second, or even third g...
Folk/Rock choices that are well recorded
"Me & Bobby McGee" by Gordon Lightfoot is very well recorded.
How long should speakers last?
It seems like dynamic drivers can last if the surround is made of Butyl (rubber) rather than foam. I have a pair of early-70's ESS Transtatics with KEF drivers (B139 and B110) which are still fine.
What is your favorite 1 hit wonder from the 70's?
Marty---When Edmunds and Lowe started working together on their respective solo albums, they started touring billed as whomever's record was being promoted. That touring Band was Dave and Nick of course, with guitarist Billy Bremmer and drummer Te...
help me choosing first HiFi
Finding a good dealer, assuming there is one within driving distance of you, is a much better way to proceed at assembling a music system, IMO.
Any thoughts on passive v. active speakers?
If your taste is refined enough for you to own the Atma-Sphere amps, are you sure there even IS a powered speaker you would be happy with?
Is no preamp really better that a good preamp?
All true Phusis, but the OP was asking specifically about adding a separate (perhaps tube) pre-amp between both his DAC & phono stage and his power amp.
What is your favorite 1 hit wonder from the 70's?
Well, he may have had another hit, but not until the 80's and not as big as this one, so I'll say Dave Edmunds' "I Hear You Knockin'" (an old Smiley Lewis Blues, a hit for Dave in '71). It is as tension-and-release filled as anything I have ever h...
Stand out phono stages
Oops---it should read "(from the highest-output moving-magnet and moving-iron types)", not moving-coil.

You're right Onhwy61; it's not just on long held notes, but on short ones as well ;-). I'm also not crazy about B.B.'s tone. There's not enough tube saturation for me (B.B., try a lower-powered amp cranked up to 11), but that, of course, is a matt...
Is no preamp really better that a good preamp?
Having enough gain in a source component is not all that is necessary to get the best sound out of that component. The output stage of a good pre-amp is engineered to drive the input stage of a power amp, while any given DAC or phono stage may or ...
EAT EC88 - your opinions really appreciated
I talked recently to Kevin Deal, who told me he found EAT tubes to provide a lesser quality of sound than many others. No offense Beewax---Kevin said it, not me!
Is it possible to down-mix stereo outs to mono amp
Right you are Al, your original post wasn't up yet when I made mine. As for sound quality loss from a Y-adaptor, with the Grundig being the final link would that really be of much concern?
