KT-120 tubes vs Gold Lion KT88's
Not all amps that are okay with 120's are also with 150's, the Music Reference RM-200 being one. I think some parts values would need to be changed in that amp. Best check with the maker of an amp before putting in 150's.
Garage Band Hangover
Last time I was in Austin (I was planning on moving there to resume playing with a good guitarist I had been in a Band with in L.A., who was now in Cornell Hurd's Band, but he was dying of lung cancer by the time I got there) I went to Antone's an...
Most achingly-beautiful music
Tubegroover---"Don't Worry Baby" is just gorgeous! My first live concert was The Beach Boys in the Summer of '64, and when Brian sang the line "and she makes love to me" in DWB, the girls in the audience went completely insane. But I didn't really...
Anyone Compared ARC Ref 75SE and 75 With KT150
Right you are. HM has some of the best of the Period/Original Instrument/Historically Informed (choose your favorite term!) musicians, singers, and conductors in the field, Nicholas McGegan, Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie, and Rene Jacobs a...

I didn't say she was born there! ;-)

I've been thinking about the why, Tostadosunidos. Janis strikes me as trying pretty hard to sound "bluesy", to sound Black, ya know? And the fact that it doesn't come naturally seems evident. Her voice sounds a little "pinched" to me, and kinda sh...
Garage Band Hangover
I do realize my opinion of Janis is a minority one. Same with Hendrix. That's okay, they get a lot of love from others. A singers voice is so personal, so intimate, isn't it? And so revealing of who he or she is, I sometimes feel like a voyeur whi...

I too love the CD, Rok2id. Can you imagine having to suffer through listening to a long piece spread over multiple 78's?! When I was young and still living with the parents, I would fall asleep every night with Koss Pro-4AA phones on my head, waki...
Anyone Compared ARC Ref 75SE and 75 With KT150
Oregonpapa---100 degrees? I miss those mild L.A. Summers ;-). I'm out in Palm Desert now, and we regularly get up to 115-117. My monthly electrical bill (which includes the operation of the house's air conditioner) this Summer has been $500! I sol...
Garage Band Hangover
The undisputed expert on Garage Bands was Greg Shaw (R.I.P.), of Bomp Records and Magazine fame. He was waaay into Garage, and in the 80's started a club (which he named The Garage!) in L.A. to put on shows featuring nothing but. At the time of hi...
Garage Band Hangover
Growing up in Cupertino (now home to Apple and ebay, in the 60's just a bedroom-community suburb of San Jose), I saw a LOT of Garage Bands. The stars of our scene (The Chocolate Watchband, The Syndicate of Sound, Stained Glass---originally The Tro...
Tube Watts vs. Solid State Watts - Any credence?
Kijanki is very right---a hard clipping amp is dangerous to the health of your tweeters. I had a low-powered SS amp burn out a dome tweeter in the blink of an eye when it clipped, and the volume was pretty low.

Born in Indonesia=not so much love of Bach? I can in no way relate to Asian music (it's scales sounding "foreign" to me is definitely a result of cultural, if not societal, conditioning), but the guys at Sony sure like Beethoven! Being able to fit...
Anyone heard the E.A.R. "Acute"?
Arsh---No, Mullards are no longer being produced (if they are, new ones are not the ones Tim was speaking of. He was very dismissive of current-production tubes in general), I don't believe. You have to get them from a vintage tube dealer if you w...

Of course J.S.'s music was greatly influenced by his family environment, academic education, and faith, but are those considered "social conditions"? That's a rather broad definition---might as well say it springs from being alive! It also minimiz...
