Someone had mentioned Christopher Hansen on a thread I read the other day
Taters, I have never been to Sound By Singer, though I have seen Andy strutting around CES (if you've seen him, you know what I mean ;-), but went to Lyric in '83 when I lived in Flushing, Queens. I was already an ARC/Magneplanar owner, and was in...
Klipsch love them or hate them.
Horns provide a very forward, immediate sound, with lots of presence. Too much presence, having a severe "cupped-hands around a mouth"/"pinched nose" coloration that quickly becomes irksome. The worst speakers, by far, I've ever heard for vocals. ...

I had forgotten about Christopher Hansen Ltd.. Located in Westwood, it was as high end as you could find on the West Coast, sort of our Lyric. The front of the shop was imposing, with a massive carved-wood front door in the middle of a huge ivy-co...
Footers under big heavy speakers (Stillpoints Ultra 5, Sistrum rack, Finite Elements,..?)
Oops, the last work in the first sentence above should obviously be vertical, not horizontal. Hey Audiogon, what do you have against making edits possible?!

As Geoff said, roller bearings give you isolation/decoupling in the lateral/horizontal/rotational plane, but not in the horizontal. As he also said, springs can be used to isolate in the vertical plane. That spring can be a typical metal one as fo...

Ball bearings isolate in the lateral/rotational plane (to what frequency determined by the steepness of the wall of the "bowl" they are placed in), couple in the vertical.
Suspensions on turntable...really effective?
Go to the Minus K website for some real good info on isolation. You can get one of their platforms for around $2500.
Why I prefer gear that is made domestically
Schubert, I became a fan of Frank Van Alstine when he had the temerity to offer a mod for the ARC SP-3 at a time when Bill Johnson's design talents were considered unimpeachable. How dare he! The fact was, Franks mod "corrected" a few flaws in the...
When rap came out 30 years ago I thought it was just a fad
Exactly, onhwy61! Sophisticated music listeners said the same about Elvis and the other Rock n' Rollers in the 50's (Frank Sinatra calling them "cretins"). It appears each generation feels the same way about the one that follows. I don't find that...
Tonearms longer than 12 inches
stringreen---I've heard that about the Helius arms of old. They are kind of the Jaguar of arms! Hopefully Helius has improved, as has Jaguar, the build quality and reliability of their current arms.
Largest audiophile club in the world with over 1500 members
Greece seems to be a hotbed of audiophile activity.
Hearing loss and audio reviewers ? READ ON
I didn't get "Musician's Earplugs" (molded inserts that go into the ear canal, onto which are installed attenuator discs of varying dB---5-10-15) until I was in my late thirties. By that time I had developed a moderate case of tinnitus (ringing), ...
Retired audiophile?
Another reason music gains even more ground on sound-for-sounds-sake as one reaches retirement age, is the growing awareness of one's mortality, and the finite number of hours left in one's life in which to listen to music. Those remaining hours a...

No offence taken, Tom. Au contraire'---I appreciate your knowledge! That fact about Bloomfield is interesting, isn't it? I read an interview with Mike wherein he described arriving at the session intending to play guitar, but upon hearing Robertso...
Your favorite BEACH BOYS LP besides PET SOUNDS
Let us know how you feel about mono versus stereo Pet Sounds, ay? I have a half-dozen copies of the album (LP and CD), but all mono, out of deference to Brian (he's almost deaf in one ear, and always mixed to mono). By the way, all the early BB al...
