Best Bang For The Buck I've Ever Spent Thanks for all the info, Terry. You are really stoking my interest in the Terminator!
VPI 2nd Pivot for 3D Really good points, slaw. I didn't want to be that harsh, trying to give Harry the benefit of the doubt. But your assessment is more on point than mine. I feel the same way about ARC, finding their frequent and endless updates and revisions of cur...
Your favourite 2017 album.? Wow slaw, what a line-up! Rodney has impeccable taste.
Tech That Flopped! The Ampeg SVT bass amp, for years the gold standard for bass players, is certainly not a sloppy-sounding bass reflex design, but a clean sealed one. Recordings of it with a Fender P-Bass plugged into it sound great on my speakers and subs.
Best Drum Solos Very, very good indeed, ghosthouse! Seeing and hearing Gadd play is a humbling, almost humiliating, experience.
Why is modern pop music today so terrible? I call almost all non-Classical music Pop, except perhaps Jazz. Pop because the music is song-centric, all else flowing from that fact. Jazz is as much about the musicians improvising as it is about the song itself, more than Rock, and even Blues....
Latest bin find.....Elton John Bill, upon hearing of the flooding in Texas I immediately thought of you in your really cool old (but new to you) house in Austin (I had already seen the pics of it in your Blog postings I received via email). I was relieved when the storm took a ...
VPI 2nd Pivot for 3D stringreen, it's not VPI's (or anyone else's) attempts to keep improving it's product(s)---making incremental improvements to a model over time---that it's detractors find objectionable, but rather their history of first embracing one design philo...
Why is modern pop music today so terrible? I hear the songs of a lot of young singer/songwriters, both in Portland/Vancouver bars & pubs and on TV (my sisters watch all the talent competition shows), and I have noticed a couple of things about most of them. The chord sequences are very...
Best Bang For The Buck I've Ever Spent Terry, are you speaking of the RTOM Moongel drumhead damping pads? They are pretty subtle on heads (I’ve used small cotton pads taped onto mine---long used by studio drummers---for many years), but never tried them on a tonearm. Sounds promising. ...
VPI 2nd Pivot for 3D So true, slaw. While having made a number of turntables worth owning (though not tonearms---unipivots suck!), VPI has little credibility in terms of a design point-of-view or philosophy. Or, I guess Harry can claim, it has "evolved" ;-).
Latest bin find.....Elton John tablejockey---the Fender ’65 Deluxe Reverb, both original (I used to own one) and reissue, is a FANTASTIC sounding amp! Jonny Kaplan played a Gibson Les Paul Jr. through one when I gigged with him, and it was the best sounding guitar I’ve ever hea...
Vintage Mcintosh tuner MR78 designer Richard Modaferri offers his update/optimization of the tuner through Audio Classics. He incorporates everything he has learned about tuner design since the tuner was introduced into his update, improving both the 78's RF performance...
Linn LP12......That good?? Oops, I meant to say glorified, not glamourized. My first good table was the AR XA, and I watched Brooks Berdan set up a few LP12's. He wasn't too impressed with it, feeling, as did Peter Moncrieff of IAR, that the Oracle Delphi was a far better t...
Linn LP12......That good?? The LP12 was, in the opinion of some, nothing more than a glamourized Acoustic Research XA. A better bearing and superior machining, but their over-all design basically the same. From a design viewpoint, they are in fact almost identical. Linn use... |
