Great Experience with Feickert Protractor
jmc, is the Mint turntable-specific, or arm-specific? I haven't checked it out yet, gotta do that. Does it require the exact location of the arm's pivot be known? There is one arm---the Helius Omega---with the vertical and horizontal bearings havi...
Craigslist transaction went south...
A good lesson in why letting buyers come to your house in a bad idea. Imagine if he knew where you live?! One advisable idea with local sales is to allow the buyer to audition the component in his system, to insure it is operating to his satisfact...
A few versus that connect you........what song is it?
I don’t don’t recognize the line slaw, but I am reminded of a couple from my favorite, outside of Hank Williams, lyricist:"You’re an idiot, babe, it’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe"."We’re all idiots, babe, It’s a wonder we can even ...
Upgrading Turntable suggestions
Buying from a real good turntable retailer, who is an expert at set-up, may be more important than which table/arm/cartridge one selects. If you are anywhere in S. California (or even if you don't mind buying long-distance), Brian Berdan at Audio ...
Sellers increasingly overgrade records
Badmouthing ebay is commonplace, but if you are careful, know what to ask, look very carefully at the pics, and have some patience (willing to wait for a Mint/Mint- copy to come along), there are a lot of records available on the site at very mode...
Are the folks at Vandersteen ok?
I started accompanying a long-time Vandersteen dealer to the Vegas CES in the mid-90’s through early-2000’s, and one year Richard invited the dealer and his wife and a couple of the dealers staff to dinner. The dealer asked Richard if he minded if...
Why is good, deep bass so difficult? - Myths and their Busters
The servo-controlled woofers in Rythmik subs are described as "stopping on a dime". I liken them to a high-torque engine---very responsive. They "track" the signal very closely; no overhang/overshoot, no bloat or plumpness. Lean and clean!
Sadly missed manufacturers
BEL (Brown Electronic Laboratories), NYAL (New York Audio Labs), Beveridge, Dodd Audio.
Why is good, deep bass so difficult? - Myths and their Busters
Not a recording studio, but Sterling Sound Mastering in NYC have three pair of Rythmik F15 Direct Servo Feedback Subwoofers in their monitor systems, each with a 15" woofer. Killer bass. Rythmik owner/designer Brian Ding has been asked about the q...
Sellers increasingly overgrade records
Craig Moerer is a safe bet. I first bought from him out of Goldmine Record Collectors Magazine, way back in 1977---40 years ago!
Hope for the blues..
Amen, onhwy61. Licks can be studied, learned, and regurgitated. Creating music that expresses deep feelings and truths comes from one’s soul, not fingers. A lot of the greatest Bluesmen were pretty rough and unpolished as players and singers, but ...
High Pass (Brick Wall/Rumble) Filter Suggestions
Just so you'll know, the Fmod filters are only 12dB/octave, not exactly "brickwall" !
Hope for the blues..
It may be just me, but I don’t believe it is advanced technical ability that makes for a great blues player (in regard to speed, in particular), certainly not that alone. Jazz perhaps, but blues to me is about phrasing, melodicism, lyricism, and a...
Are you seeing more 9/10s?
The Vintage musical instrument business (the drum sector, at any rate) is even worse. Absolute junk and trash described as near-mint. Add poor packing and shipping cartons, and what you receive is often un-restorable. One ends up buying only from ...
Moving a 5,000 vinyl LP collection safely
I know what I would do: Rent an Econoline-type van (or even a minivan), and pack and drive the LP’s myself. On the west coast a rental is $20/day plus about a buck a mile from U-Haul, or $50/day with unlimited miles from Enterprise.
