Whats playing on your system today?
Oh man, ozzy, Quicksilver's version of "Pride Of Man" (a Hamilton Camp song) is KILLER! They were good live too, one of the best SF bands of the late-60's.
Set me straight, don't pull punches
I knew a band with a kiddie-ride (the ones they useta have in front of grocery stores) in their living room. They then added a "Big Boy" from a Bob's restaurant to the décor. They were a hard-drinkin' buncha guys, and would go furniture "shopping"...
Audio Horizons fuses.... won’t buy them again...
Chow charges to repair an apparently defective (at best; it could also be just a poorly designed one), two month old product? We have not reached a new low?!
Filling speaker stands: sand, lead, steel, rice. Full, half, etc?
willem, surely Mr. Shaw considers room placement, not just height, an important determiner of speaker sound quality. And how about degree of toe-in? I recently finally heard a pair of Magicos in a home (having heard them in showrooms a fair amount...
Musician vs. audiophile
stringreen, the most brilliant musician I've ever known said the same to me when he heard his first high-end system (mine) in 1974. He knew the music of his favorite composers (J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven) so well from studying the scores, that w...

I bought a Solid Steel stand from the U.S. distributor at the Vegas CES in the late 90's. He had applied lead tape to all the metal tubes, in locations that weren't visible---the back of each leg, and the backs and bottoms of the cross-beams.

For dry sand, look for Silica at a building supply yard near you. It is not organic sand, but rather man-made, and is used in sand blasting. It is available in many different grades---the size of each grain---60 being a good one. A 100 lb. bag cos...
Equalization
The best use of tone controls (which went out-of-fashion in high-end in the 70's) is to correct for the differing balances found in recordings. The Quad pre-amps had (have?) great ones.
Musician vs. audiophile
James Boyk, Pianist In Residence at the California Institute of Technology (where he teaches), is a performing musician, recording engineer at his label Performance Recordings, equipment reviewer, and long-time audiophile. In one talk he gave, he ...
Static Electricity on Vinyl
analogluvr, the TNT's plinth is black acrylic, right? What are the Teres and Micro made of?
Why do some amps provide more output power when using a balanced connection?
gdhal, did you misread Mark's post? He described the difference between 12dB and 18dB as "not at all insignificant", same as you.
Help! Tweaking My Lovan Rack for new Big A**ed Transrotor Turntable!
prof, for the $18 a lb. the Wall Damp scraps cost (including shipping iirc), it is well worth a try, ay? That buys you about twenty-five 2.5/3" x 4" pieces.
Whats on your turntable tonight?
You’re SO right, tostadodunitos, Richard Manuel is a great drummer. Not in the technical sense, but musically. Levon Helm started the 1965 Bob Dylan world tour as the drummer in Dylan’s backing band for the tour, The Hawks. But he found the booing...
Eminent Technology LFT-8b in Harry's system
Thanks again Bruce. The Jupiter caps come highly recommended, preferred by Danny Richie of GR Research (as well as you ;-). They aren't cheap, but the LFT-8b x/o is relatively simple, with not that many parts.
Help! Tweaking My Lovan Rack for new Big A**ed Transrotor Turntable!
prof, the approximately 25 ASC Wall Damp scraps I received are all 4" by between 2.5" and 3". WD is just under 1/16" thick, with a layer of adhesive on both sides, like carpet tape. The odor you refer to, found in the roofing materials (tar paper ...
