Vandersteen Treo CT vs Mag 3.7i speakers
newton, though 5ft. or more is optimum for planars (all, not just Maggies), 4ft. can be acceptable if you treat the wall behind the speakers with either absorption or diffusion. Absorption for a smaller, more "direct" sound, diffusion for a bigger...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Great album reubent, along with Rubber Soul, their two best imo.
Best way to decrease the internal volume of a sealed speaker?
ozzy, Black Hole 5 is a 1-3/8" thick cabinet damping pad with adhesive on one side. You attach it to the cabinet's interior walls to damp panel resonance and absorb internal reflections. GR Research sells an even better panel damping material name...

frogman, it’s great to hear about Country music fans (such as your wife) liking the "real" stuff, not what’s being pushed by Nashville. John Hiatt isn’t marketed as a Country artist (more as a singer/songwriter), but he is more country than what’s...
connecting a sub-woofer to a preamp
Rythmik subs have speaker-level output binding posts.
Best way to decrease the internal volume of a sealed speaker?
Add bracing---dowels attached to opposing walls. It will not only decrease the enclosure's internal volume, but make it more non-resonant (or at least raise the frequency at which it resonates, thus making the resonance less audible).

Ry Cooder is great not only as a guitarist/frontman/bandleader/singer (of a "certain" sort ;-), but also as a sideman. When John Hiatt was preparing to record his Bring The Family album, the record’s producer invited him to choose the players for ...
Most overrated bands
I saw and heard Bill Weir and what remains of The Dead (the two drummers) on TV last week, and omg was he awful. Can’t sing to save his life, and neither could Jerry Garcia. I kinda liked the first three Dead albums at the time of their release, b...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
John, it’s just like anything else; there are good horn loudspeakers, and not so good. They got their bad reputation from the PA designs of the "dark ages" (1940’s-50’s). The old Altec A7 was a very popular PA loudspeaker (my teenage band had a pa...
Medium Mass or Low Mass Tonearms?
tzh21y---Don't worry about your LP's; a mismatch between an arm's moving mass and a cartridge's compliance results in, not groove damage, but, as others are pointing to here, a too-high or too-low resonant frequency. What WILL cause groove damage ...

Another guitarist infamous amongst his peers is the late Danny Gatton. He played Jazz, Hillbilly, Blues, Rockabilly, you name it. Vince Gill nicknamed him "The Humbler". An astounding talent who decided to leave this world ahead of schedule. His g...
What makes tape sound better than vinyl ?
Atmasphere? I feel like Rodney Dangerfield! ;-)
On/Off switch for RM_9 Mk1 does anyone know the voltage that isneeded for switch?
Roger silk screens the tube biasing info on his amps top plates, so that in fifty or a hundred years they can still be optimized. Built to last, and sound real good long after more fashionable amps have been long dead, their many owners having fin...

Amen, Orpheus. Ry Cooder is in my Top 10 guitarists of all-time list, and I know a lot of musicians---guitarists or otherwise---who feel the same.
Eminent Technology LFT-8b in Harry's system
One great thing about the LFT-8b is that it's low 180Hz x/o frequency allows it to be used with a high-quality sub in place of it's stock woofer. Then a good tube amp can be used on the midrange magnetic-planar midrange driver and tweeter, which p...
