What is your listening chair?
A 1930-40’s Art Deco stuffed chair with ottoman. Deep, deep blue cloth (so deep it appears to be black) with cream piping, the top of it’s back 32" from the floor, below my ears. Elegant and comfortable!
Tonearm Advice Needed
I'm no arm & cartridge expert, but many mc cartridges benefit from not a lower mass arm, but a higher mass one. It has to do with the compliance of the cantilever, and the resonance resulting from the combination of that figure and the arm's m...
Best analytical loudspeakers for strings (midrange)?
As so many are saying here, just about any planar loudspeaker; Electrostatic, Magnetic-Planar, or Ribbon. In the past, there have been only a few available at any given time; now there are many, at all kinds of price points. Truth-of-timbre is one...
Greatest rhythm sections
@dragunski , you are quite right. The same can be said about the guitarists role in Jump Blues bands, one of which I worked in during the mid-70’s. I love focusing on the guitarist in such bands, as they play lots of passing chords, often with bea...
If your system were a car!
I second gshepardbuster’s nomination of a DeLorean DMC-12. Via my system, I am transported back to the first half of the 18th Century, when J.S. Bach was writing his masterpieces. And to the 1940’s-50’s, when Hank Williams was writing his.
Whats playing on your system today?
Well I DO listen to ABBA, and unapologetically! Fantastic Pop music, with excellently crafted chord progressions, melodies, and harmonies. Frida made some great solo albums, and does a killer version of Jackie DeShannon's classic "When You Walk In...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Good one @tooblue. My favorite album of Randy's, then his debut. He was great until he went Rock, and hired Toto to be his band. Ugh.
Takes one to know one
Thanks, @thelid. I had read this long ago, but printing it here is a great idea. It explains The Band's downward spiral real well. There are a couple of places I want to make it to before I die, Big Pink being at the top of the list.
Unforggetable song titals
"Baby Let Me Bang Your Box" by Doug Clark And The Hot Nuts. I'm not making it up ;-).
Advice Needed on Choosing a Turntable
I've had both the Thorens TD-125 MK.2 and the VPI HW-19 Mk.2, and much prefer the VPI. You can pick one up for around $500, or $1000 with an arm. If you find the table without an arm for around $500, you'll have plenty left for an arm of your own ...
Kimber "house sound"
To truly ascertain the sound of a length of wire, a bypass test would need to be performed. Sounds like a job for Peter Moncreiff! The output of a pair of mono amps, each placed directly behind one of a pair of speakers, directly into the speakers...
Takes one to know one
Great post, @tostadosunidos. I met Levon only once, at his book signing. He was the last man on Earth who would have "gotten above his raisin'". I saw him with his own band at The House Of Blues after his throat surgery (for the cancer---he was a ...
Magnepan Owners
@polarin, go to the Planar Speaker Asylum Forum, go into the Magnepan section, and do a thread search for modifications. There are detailed discussions of what members have done to their Maggies, with pics.Disconnecting the fuse holder and install...
Small room electrostat/ planar speaker?
@clio09, I have a nice pair of the LFT-4 I could let go. Research that model, and if you're interested maybe we can do some horse trading!
Timbernation Platform Problems
$300 will buy a lot more isolation than a piece of maple wood provides. I'm mystified by their popularity.
