Does impedance of a speaker change when one bi-amps? Being able to get rid of the speaker-level crossover parts is one of the two reasons for bi-amping (doing so has at least the potential for producing a worthwhile improvement in the sound quality of a loudspeaker). The other is, as Roger Modjeski ...
Discontinued equipment that you wish were still here. What do you miss or think will miss? @weebeesdad, yep, Tom Carione is still at Brooks Berdan Ltd. in Monrovia, CA. He's in the shop on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and is a great tech. He did (Brooks left us awhile back, but his widow Sheila has kept the shop going) all Brooks' bench jo...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)? Exactly slaw, Rock. The two are used interchangeably, as if they mean the same thing. They obviously do to younger dudes, but not to me. Here’s how I differentiate between the two:Rock ’n’ Roll, or Rock & Roll, or Rock and Roll, is the combina...
Your Forever Pieces? What and Why? Slaws nomination of his Townshend Rock 7 tunrtable has broken down by resistance to contributing my own nominee. I have a much older Rock, the Elite (Mk.2), from the early 90's. Mounted on it is the Zeta arm/London Super Gold (Mk.7, w/fineline sty...
Speaker type for my Conrad-Johnson ET5/LP70S tube combo @routeman21, that’s the thing about ESL’s. They are so transparent, you are listening through them as much as to them. Crappy amp + ESL = crappy sound. Magnetic-planars aren’t quite as transparent as ESL’s, imo, but as both are dipole planars they...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)? All right slaw, I didn't want to be the one to say it, but now that you have ;-). I too saw the doors (they made a point of using all lower case in their name, perhaps as a conceit a la e.e. cummings ;-), twice. Not only were they not a Rock 'n' R...
What separate tube phono stage do you use ? Good question inna. The phono amp in the EAR-Yoshino 868 is also considered by some to be mighty fine, but there aren't a lot of them around. The English mags use to do "shoot-outs", comparing comparably-priced components. I'm not expecting to see...
Tune of the Day Good one slaw. I just listened to Mary’s Filth & Fire album, which I love. It was produced by Gurf Morlix, Lucinda Williams' guitarist/bandleader/producer up through and including her Car Wheels On A Gravel Road album. Talented guy.
Discontinued equipment that you wish were still here. What do you miss or think will miss? @boxer12, I believe it is Bedini you are thinking of.
Speaker type for my Conrad-Johnson ET5/LP70S tube combo routeman21, if your amp isn't enough for the ET's, it REALLY isn't enough for Maggies, which need far more power. Perhaps a pair of ESL's would be better for your amp, though some of them also require or benefit from more than 70 watts.
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. Roger, why is damping such an outdated term? ;-) I have heard you speak of how even a low output impedance amp doesn't, contrary to common believe, "damp" a woofer. You have quoted Paul Klipsch on the subject, as I recall.
What separate tube phono stage do you use ? Just as a reminder, there ARE high output cartridges that compete with, if not surpass, low output moving coils, and are fully deserving of a superior RIAA phono amp. Grado and London, both moving iron designs, need only 40dB or so of gain. George...
Speaker type for my Conrad-Johnson ET5/LP70S tube combo Consider the Eminent Technology LFT-8b, a hybrid magnetic-planar (180Hz up)/dynamic woofer (180Hz down) loudspeaker that retails for $2499. It doesn't need as much power as Maggies, and is better suited to your power amp, as it is a nominal 8 ohm ...
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. @jcder, everyone is going to recommend his own pre in answer to your question. Here are a couple to consider: There is a Hovland HP-100 listed on Audiogon right now (at an asking price of $2350), a fine line stage (I heard it in Brooks Berdan’s re...
