Testing 6H30 tubes While they are both novals, 9 pins, these tubes are not equivalents. Good luck.
Lyra Delos A truth teller or what? "Once you get to know your digital rig I think it’s the quickest, most dependable means of assessing the overall tonality of your analog rig. "Terrific advice Thom!"Personally, loading any Lyra down to 65ohms is killing it. It ius supposed to be l...
Doh! Modding vs. Selling "Personally I have learned, that except for my DIY work, if I get an itch to mod a piece of gear, I am better of trading it in."Personally, if I get an itch to mod a piece of gear, it had better be worth modding to begin with, or I’d trade it in. ...
VPI SAMA Flywheel (small) vpi already gave you the answer - ditch the flywheel. It’s noisy! Try it without it and you won't hear anything.
What position is your balance control set at and why? Excepting hearing loss or unmatched tubes, the most common reason not to use a centered balance control is if your room’s rear or side walls are not symmetric with regard to placement of your speakers. This also happens if one side wall has openin...
Have anyone replace VPI SSM belt with string? I tried this a couple of years ago on a VPI HW-19 MKIII using silk thread. You will need a motor controller to get the right speed (I used a Phoenix Engineering Roadrunner). Ultimately, the set-up was too much of a PITA. Although I liked the soun...
Audio Education The bible is here and has never been equaled IMHO: Audio Cyclopedia by Howard M. Tremaine, 1969. A little expensive (~$120) and huge at 1,700 pages, but it has EVERYTHING including audio designs and history. Also found on eBay.https://www.amazon.c...
Magnepan Owners Probably won't make that much of a difference compared with completely rewiring the speakers with various gauges of OFC cryoed copper wire, using copper binding posts, bypassing the fuses, upgrading the stands buying Mye's, and then building an en...
Question for TW Acustic Owners ...and good luck not smashing your fingers if you own the 45 lb heavy copper platter.
TT mats Here’s an interesting thin, coated, aluminum mat I’m using on my TW Acustic Anniversary, the SPEC Analog Disc Sheet AP-UDI, and a related TT mat comparo at Part-time audiophile:https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2017/02/15/five-turntable-mats-an-audio...
Bi-amping Luvrockin Maybe you’re still thinking about it? Here’s an excerpt from Nelson Pass in the Intro of the Pass Labs XVR-1 product manual. It’s the bible (literally at 20+ pages) on active crossovers basics, theory, and how to set them up. Have at it....
Bi-amping Some of the info above is not accurate. Anyway, I’m not sure it would be worth it and this is coming from someone who’s bi and tri-amped for 40 years. Your B&Ws are a relatively easy-to-drive load averaging around 6 ohms with a complementary m...
Speaker suggestions – Possible Magnepan 3.6R or Dunlavy SC-IV Can’t go wrong with either and you’ve got the space. I almost bought the IVs at one point so understand why you like them. Personally, moving the Dunlavy’s around would be a chore, and it doesn’t sound like your wife will volunteer to help! Anothe...

Who do you like for equipment mods? Frank Van Alstine modded my old Dynaco FM-5 tuner about 30 years ago. It sounded much, much better than my Magnum Dynalab Etude tuner which I ended up selling. Still have the Dynaco. Thanks, didn't know he still did mods. |
