Looking for a good tech in the Philadelphia, PA area. In the future, you might try RHB Sound Dezign, aka Backert Labs. Bob designs audio equipment and also does mods and repairs to tube equipment. He’s in Churchville, PA, north of Philly. He’s done dozens of jobs for me. The work’s outstanding, reaso...
What are your top three live concerts of all time? 1) Ivan Moravec (Carnegie Hall), 2) the original Pat Metheney Group (with Lyle & Jaco), 3) Alice Cooper (with the snake). No, no. Wait a minute.... Was I really there? That last one can't be on there.
Turntable Mats: Rubber, Felt or Cork. Any turntable mat will change the sound. I happen to like the SPEC Audio AP-UDI. Will you? Who knows.
Ultrasonic cleaning before and after Noromance, glad you only paid $1.99 for the record. An 80/20 solution is WAY too much alcohol for records. Even 5% is pushing it. Agree on the value of ultrasonic cleaning, but really dirty records may still need a scrub. I have bought lots of use...
Do any still use an older high end tuner from the past?.... A very heavily modded Sansui TU-717 and a Dyna FM 5 very modded by Frank Van Alstine. Both are terrific. The roof mounted APS-9B antenna , low loss balun, and RG-11 cable all help too.
Magnepan Sweet Spot I have owned the T-1Ds, the 3.5s and now own 3.6s. I've owned Magnepans for 40 years A solid central image is not the speakers strongest point due to their physical size with the side by side layout of the drivers next to each other. IMHO, the T...
Magnepan Mods You don’t say what you are trying to accomplish or what model you have. I have done every mod possible except apply damping material to the panels (messy). My 3.6s are biamped with a Pass Labs active crossover (totally modified) and tower subs. Th...
Great Experience with Bill Thalmann @ Musical Technology (equipment repair) I had Bill totally upgrade a custom hybrid amp for me with over 100 parts. He also modified a very complex active 3 way crossover with PITA double sided circuit boards. He does great work on very complex jobs. A really nice guy as well. I'm a bi...
Review: VPI Industries HW-19 mkIV Turntable I've had a VPI HW-19 MKIII w/ SAMA, Walker motor controller, sorbothane pucks, more or less since the mid 80s. A couple of years ago added a Phoenix Engineering Roadrunner & Eagle PS and updated the bearing to an Applied Fidelity GENIII cerami...
Magnepan .7 review Great review! We have things in common. I have 3.6s, a 14’ wide room, and also used REW extensively for set up (see my All out Assault REW plot - Oh, I need a little more toe in....). Surprised about the treble as many complain their ribbons are to...
Need advice on subwoofer for maggies Rythmik. Extremely well made & good value.
Top Ten Tuners of all Time?? NO ONE'S done a more systematic comparison of tuner performance than these guys at Tuner Info Center including mod/upgrades:http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/
Using Maple Butcher Block Under a Turntable I don’t think there’s a simple answer to this question. It depends on the floor, the rack, and the turntable. I’d try different things. I have 2 turntables. My equipment rack has 3" wood maple shelves that sit on small sorbothane bumpers and it si...
Audio Research Ref 10 vs 40th Anniversary preamp There’s no discernable difference in the basic circuit besides the microelectronics. The output film caps and the original PS 6550C tubes used are different. There’s a noticeable difference in sonics between the REF40’s SED Winged "C" 6550C and th...
Testing 6H30 tubes You could try to find someone with an Amplitrex AT-1000 tube tester or also a Maximatcher preamp tester. They have settings for the 6H30s and test at actual equipment voltages. Some other testers may work if you can adjust the plate and grid volta... |
