Preamp recommendation LTA makes an excellent preamp that is dead quiet and sounds great, although I have no experience with the least expensive LTA. Even better is the out of your budget Berning.Atma-sphere has a very interesting UV-1 which I have yet to hear. Their m...
Preamp recommendation Do research on budget tubed designs like Rogue and Schiit especially regarding noise. In your budget I cant think of a single tube preamp that I would consider unless you are willing to go used.
tough choices Why not consider other less labor intensive tube amplifiers? I would go to another dealer to see what they have to offer.
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state? The problem with your Rogue is most likely not the tubes but just a higher noise floor with the component. Could be an issue with gain and also probably just the price you pay for a less expensive component. You can only do so much for a given ret...
Schiit Freya + emits a high pitch squeal when using tube stage For over 20 years I have sold old stock vacuum tubes on a retail basis and also provided bulk stock new production to manufacturers. Over a 2 year period all of the noise/microphonics issues I had with hundreds of 6SN7s and, I believe, 12AU7s sold...
Schiit Freya + emits a high pitch squeal when using tube stage The older units had problems with noise and microphonics. Perhaps this is still the case. I wont retube Schiit products for this reason.
Manley snapper vs Atma-sphere M60 M-60s all the way! Getting rid of the transformers is a real game changer. SET and P.P. are just intrinsically inferior if you have the correct impedance speakers. I have owned all of these types and there simply is no comparison. I will say that ...
Highest BUILD quality tube amps? I liked my VAC Phi 200.
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state? True NOS has little to do with test results. True NOS is a tube which has never been in a circuit other than a tester, which can be hard to discern at times. Most true NOS come with original boxes. Being NOS doesnt make the tube better it just mea...
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state? By wary of any tube seller that uses the term: "NOS in white boxes". Much more common with JAN tubes that were bulk packed, this term usually means that the tube tests as NOS and comes in a white box. Not the same thing.
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state? Very few JAN (military) tubes were electronically any different than the normal tubes in the same family. They will sound the same, last the same length of time and, at best, were specially tested for certain characteristics like shock/vibration.
A revealing speaker Problem that I had with Tonian in the past when we discussed his speaker is when he said he "tuned" the thin walled cabinet. I stand by the simple belief that thin walled speaker cabinets made of conventional materials will sing and add coloration...
MBL 101 (~1990) - amp suggestions. I heard one of these models with a pair of CAT monoblocks and it sucked them dry. Even at low volumes you could tell that these amps werent nearly powerful enough. Perhaps atma-sphere is correct, although I have my doubts, that it is the type of t...
Put that in your pipe(s) and smoke it But the point is that you can yell fire in a crowded room provided these people are "those" types that havent responded favorably to the social conditioning du jour.
When was the first time that you heard great sounding speakers? A system in Des Moines Iowa when I was about 16 or 17. B & W 801s being driven by some (by todays standards) awful S.S. electronics. |
