Speaker Analysis for Armchair Critics
Erik wrote: " I share this with all of you just as an example of the work that goes into making a loudspeaker from parts, and the tools, and how much of what we hear has to do with choices made in the crossover. " Your post and that article are a ...
Setting up a swarm - amp question
I have no direct experience with REL subs, but would expect them to have negligible effect on the load that the amplifier sees when connected as you describe. So I think you can hook up as many as you can afford and/or shoehorn into your room befor...
Speaker Imaging - Do you hear a line, or do you hear an arc??
Harrylavo made some excellent recommendations, if I may paraphrase: - We want to minimize the early sidewall reflections, ideally with distance. - We want to minimize the early reflections off the wall behind the speakers, again ideally with dista...

" Soundstage and imaging most important. "  Can you describe the room? Do you have free reign for speaker positioning?  I presume the sweet spot is the focus... does soundstaging outside the sweet spot matter?   Duke
Is soundstaging emblematic of reality?
" I don’t think I’ve ever heard a recording that fooled me into thinking it was live music." Once I was at an audio show. It was early in the morning, several of us who were associated with the room were there, and present was a musician (who gigs...
Speakers for High-End Digital Piano
@jocar37 wrote:  " I'm hoping to revive this thread to see what your thoughts are on the best piano speakers currently on the market. "  Is this for playing through at home only, or also for gigging?  Do you have a price ballpark in mind?   The ...
Where subwoofers are manufactured
My cabinets are made in the US, my woofers in Taiwan, my amplification in China, and some of my hardware is made in the US and some is imported, presumably from China. I do the assembly myself in Texas. Yee-ha!  Duke
Buying Speakers Based on Specs
Not all manufacturers measure ,low-end extension with the same yardstick, so imo you can’t necessarily make an apples-to-apples comparison between different manufacturers based on specs unless you have a pretty good idea of how they arrived at tho...
Pin point imaging isn't for everyone
Mijostyn wrote: "Sure Duke but I think there is one caveat. You don’t want reflected energy off the front wall coming right back at you." You are absolutely correct!!"I wish I could draw a picture here but essentially you want the reflection to ta...

Pin point imaging isn't for everyone
"I’m a little curious about when they were aware of it though." My recollection is that the other listeners didn’t confirm that they were aware of the sounds off to the sides being not as loud as they were used to. So I don’t think it was obvious....
Pin point imaging isn't for everyone
Erik, that primary 2 kHz comb-filter crosstalk notch is something recording engineers have to be aware of. When listening nearfield to mixing monitors in a fairly dead room, the notch is not significantly filled in by the reverberant field, so the...
Pin point imaging isn't for everyone
@erik_squires posted an interesting observation: "Even with very good imaging I notice the following: Instruments are always louder at the sides than in the center." Several weeks ago I had the privilege of setting up a set of my speakers in a wor...
Pin point imaging isn't for everyone
@david_ten poses a very interesting question: "Do differentials in volume guide perception of distance (of the performer) relative to the listening position?." Volume plays a role, but it is my understanding is that reflections play the primary ro...
Searching for matching(?) Subwoofer solution
Clio09 wrote: "I don't run equal lengths of cables to any of my woofers. Instead I cut to the length required for each woofer. I also don't worry about stepping on the cables while they are under the carpet."Same here.  Duke
