Hum on Tube Amp - Can't find source
@ervikingo  Get yourself something called a Digital Voltmeter. Set it to the AC scale and plug the probes into your AC power. Keep an eye on the voltage; when the hum shows up look at the voltage and see if its changed. Or you could also use one...
Okay to use RCA adapter on a fully balanced amp?
Here’s the part that concerns me about this amp possibly not having a "true" differential input, despite earlier verbiage: If a balanced connection cannot be used, note that the amp cannot be driven to full power from a 2-volt single-ended outpu...
Tube amps and a Stradivarius
Tube amps are not technically as accurate as solid-state but they sound more musical, I would submit that they sound that way because of the ring of the tubes just like the reverb of the Stradivarius violin. I believe the vibration of the sound f...
Purifi v Gan amps?
@noske  Ralph’s class D amps (Gan) have input of 100K ohms - this is good. They are only suitable for 60hz/120 V supplies. This makes them unsuitable for about 6 billion people. This statement isn't correct- our class D can run on 50Hz/235V no...
Okay to use RCA adapter on a fully balanced amp?
true fully balanced differential amplifier from input to output. @blkwrxwgn , you should be able to drive the amp single-ended using an adapter. I would expect that your amplifier would sound the same driven balanced or single ended based on t...
Vandersteen Forum
@gdnrbob +1  FWIW I didn't notice that the forum was for Vandersteen owners only!
Vandersteen Forum
I was trying to answer a question on that forum and the moderator @ctsooner blocked my posting privileges indefinitely. This meant I could not ask him what the problem was. I am very careful to not violate forum rules on any site and I know I di...
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll
Thanks for the feedback. The D amps are pretty old (maybe 20 years). @dekay Uh, Yikes! A lot has happened in the class D world since 20 years ago!! I couldn't take them seriously back then.
Amplifier for Wilson Audio Alexia V
Pass Labs XA30.8 (not enough power?), XA larger units are all monoblocks - Class A could be too revealing or harsh with Wilsons? @chauncey Whether an amp is revealing or not, harsh or not, has nothing to do with its class of operation, just so yo...
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll
Anyone else use Class D to run 16 ohm speakers? @dekay Yes. I run them on my Classic Audio Loudspeakers. They work fine on there- no complaints.
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll
Have you done away with your Class A Amp due to Heat concerns? Will you be moving away from Class A Amp due to Heat concerns? Will you never buy a Class A Amp due to Heat concerns? Thanks for chiming in. With your selection, it is still more...
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll
A big defender of Class D claims that Class A is going away on it’s own and would never become effected by limits placed on electrical consumption or heat output, but just because everyone no longer wants it or wants Class D or similar. I’ve be...
SUT - electrical theory and practical experience
Unlike a power amplifier, the frequency response of the RIAA implies a deeper feedback at high frequencies. Is this kind of feedback deep enough to work properly? @alexberger  If in a discrete solid state circuit, maybe?? -a lot will depend on...
SUT - electrical theory and practical experience
I don’t know that the method by which a signal is transmitted in a transistor is any better than a transformer A FET works more like a valve/tube. If you like transimpedance (current based) amps, they are more than likely a BJT. The problem ...
TMR: What is the Best Amplification for Magnepan Speakers?
@akg_ca  Wendel always made a point of telling me when we met at shows the best he ever heard the MG20.1s was with our MA-2s (that was about 20 years ago). He pretty well ran the company so you can draw your own conclusions. My point though is th...
