Progressive Rock
I use Porcupine Tree's Voyage 34 (the reissue sucks BTW) as a demo at CES and other audio shows that we do (like the recent RMAF). I also demo with ELP's first LP (pink Island edition...), Boards of Canada, Infinity Project (Mystical Experiences) ...
A question regarding "tubes"
Tubes have just as much bandwidth as transistors. The idea that tubes give up bass slam or anything like that is really nothing more than urban legend.
Best AMP for Avalon Eidolon, ARC, CAT, VAC..?
FWIW our customers report that the MA-2s are a nice combination with the Eidelons. In fact something like 95% of all the MA-2s built are running either Sound Labs or Eidelons. Based on this my feeling is that the Avalons are a tube friendly load a...
Trying to extract more from my Vandersteen
One of my employees has NHTs and I've heard Vandys with our gear many times (showed with them once at CES as well...).Vandys are not 'veiled' next to NHTs. Something else is going on, and I have to say if I were you I'd loose the MITs- I've not se...
LS3/5. What do u think ...the best match
Isn't Excel HiFi out of business? Seems to me they went out a few years ago. Are they back? The website isn't- that's for sure.

LS3/5. What do u think ...the best match
I've only heard the combo once, because one of my employees owned a set of LS3/5as. We ran them on our S-30. The speaker is an effortless load (16 ohms) so it is very tube friendly. I remember being quite surprised at how well they did bass. And t...
Tubeaholics please advise
The EL509 is probably your best bet if you plan to update the amp for a new output tube, given the scarcity of the 6LF6s.If I were you I would contact either Altavista or Rodger Modjeski, who put in a lot into the design of this amp.Good Luck!
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
Yes. It took us years to get around this problem. A big key was working with master tapes! This allowed us to know exactly what the recording really did sound like.
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
"The same with tubes..come on..I know you have a favorite type tube for your equipment... most designers do. Give up the goods!LOL"Its true. I prefer the tubes that I do because I can get them to be neutral. How neutral? Neutral enough that the st...
Amplifiers: High Current? High Voltage?
Gs5556- Nice to see your post. The seemingly 'simple' fact that you outlined seems to be missed by many in the audio community- the current in a speaker is the same for a given amount of power regardless of the technology that created the power- O...
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
Hi Gmood1, I don't agree with your statement for several reasons, not the least of which is that equipment exists that seems to lack 'tone control' qualities and in fact is able to fool jundiced audiophiles. This is a forum for high-end, not mid-f...
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
"Still waiting, but maybe they'll arrive today. Atmasphere. let me ask you a question. If you could design a passive preamp, choose an appropriate source with just the right output impedance, select the cabling to be used (for appropriate electric...
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
"Yes I agree, I suppose it is how one looks at it. I'm not designer like yourself, but don't you use something inside your equipment to filter noise or keep it to a minimum? Capacitors or something? If you did then your amplifiers or preamps would ...
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
"Also from what I've read the PLC with autoformers doesn't electrically isolate input from output like a TVC. This means you'll have less noise filtered with the PLC."In theory then, that would be a good thing.FWIW, the task of the volume control ...
