Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions I had the LP on hand too, along with a few other metal faves. The system we had in the room had no upper limits as far as sound pressures were concerned :) although the bass was best up close, which was odd. Every room has its issues...
Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions I really don't agree that metal is in general badly recorded! Despite being a manufacturer, and despite audiophiles generally using light jazz with female vocals, the fact of the matter is that metal faces its own set of issues in the recording- o...
Zu Druids low powered tube amp or high powered SS? FWIW we got our Druids from ZU in trade for an S-30. They still have the amp after 2 years and we still have the speakers. The S-30 will play the speaker to crazy levels in most rooms. They seem to work quite well together.
Tube Amp. Power ratings Jamnesta, yes. The degradation in performance of any output transformer on its 4 ohm tap is audible and measurable. You can often loose an octave off of the bass end, and often too the actual power output drops as the transformer is less efficient...
Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions I use the Classic Audio Reproductions T-3. The speaker is 8 ohms (newer versions are 16), goes from an honest 20Hz to about 40KHz, and is 97 db 1 watt/1 meter.I can shake the building with our 60 watt amp. Check out:http://www.atma-sphere.com/awar...
Class-D amps - a different re view We have an internal design rule we call the 20-year rule that prevents us from using NOS tube types, IOW the tube type has to be in current manufacture. We've had this from the beginning, so its already served us well, as we have an aggressive upd...
Tube Amp. Power ratings Cincy_bob, 'chip amps' have been around in one form or another since the late 70's. The issue with them is that the form factor limits the amount of heat they can dissipate and the amount of current that they can pass. So you can damage them if yo...
Class-D amps - a different re view If a room sounds good at a show, I pay attention, but if it does not sound good, I don't let that deter me. I've had my own room sound lousy plenty of times... its really tricky to come into a room, set up a high end stereo and have it sounding co...
Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions Zamdrang, there is a lot of difference between tube amp designs. To get a more dynamic quality (often audiophiles *mean* 'distortion' when they use the word 'dynamic' so I am clarifying that point by insisting that I mean *actual* dynamics), the l...
Tube Amp. Power ratings Porziob, the fact that there are OTLs that can handle four ohms is not a matter of debate. Some 20 years ago, your assertion was common knowledge, but the succeeding decades have produced amplifiers that fly in the face of that. Also, that tubes a...
Class-D amps - a different re view Guidocorona, FWIW there is no audible difference between a damping factor of 60 and that of 1000...
Good impedance match for Atma-Sphere MP3? Hi Bill, the MP-3 will drive any power amp made. I wouldn't worry about the input impedance of the amp.
Tube Amp. Power ratings In general you will be noticing more detail with a more relaxed presentation with tube gear. As you noticed, power is harder to make with tubes so they are often less powerful for the money. You have to use a speaker that is designed for tubes- tu...
Class-D amps - a different re view I am glad you are withdrawing from "it can be expressed in words, therefore it must be true" kind of logic. From my own perspective I have merely been dealing with what is. I notice audiophiles as hardened as I am, experiencing true rapturous epiph...
