tube burnout
My experience is that its very difficult to come up with 6DJ8/6922 tubes that do not exhibit some sort of microphonic signature, much more so than tubes that are actually designed for audio, like a 12AT7, 6SN7 or the like. It seems that 6DJ8s are ...
MBL alternatives
I run the Classic Audio Reproductions T-3. It is set up with dual 15" woofers, has 20Hz-45KHz bandwidth, nice flat impedance curve, 97 db 1 watt/1 meter and matches the transparency and detail of the best ESLs with its field-coil drivers. Nuance, ...
Good Time to be a metal fan with a turntable
In their second album, The Eros of Frigid Beauty, Aesma Daeva single-handedly raised metal to a mature artform. I use the CD for demo at audio shows all the time (track 4) and people always want to know where they can get it. http://www.symphonicm...
tube burnout
Years ago Audio Research had a similar problem with the 6DJ8s in the SP-10 (when you tried to use a low output MC cartridge). The tubes would only last about 2 weeks. Higher output cartridges allowed you to run the tubes *a lot* longer. If the 6DJ8...
Balanced Interconnect Cable for ATC Active Monitor
We've supported balanced line operation longer than anyone else in high end audio- if you want a good quality inexpensive interconnect that works great with the ATC, Mogami Neglex '4-wire' cable is a great way to go.Balanced line operation was dev...

The American 6AS7G and it variants can be problematic due to early arc-over failure. We have had some reports that the tubes hold up better in the MkIIIs and in fact what little testing we have done seems to confirm that. If American tubes are tri...
Do I need a balanced preamp?
What you have heard about your gear is probably correct- that is common with balanced equipment. With the single-ended preamp, you will loose the ability to run long cables and the cable selection will get more important to the overall sound. You d...
Good Time to be a metal fan with a turntable
How my friend Earl (the Master of Metal Mahem) put it is that if you are not laughing (because of how retarded it all is), you don't get it. Its all theater.

Spencer, we've not used 12SX7s at any time, but at one time it was a popular field modification. The 12SX7 has similar specs to the 6SN7 and it is easy to set op the filaments for 12V, so it was a way to get access to an unused tube stock.

I would love to see Aesma Daeva's second album on LP. myspace.com/aesmadaevaSome of the early Therion could be reissued too.
dead quiet
Stringreen, FWIW the hum that the Grado exhibits in the Rega is a problem with the wiring of the Rega. It can be corrected by grounding the platter bearing and the motor to the same ground that the arm uses. I have no idea why Rega does not do thi...
tonearm geometry question
Well, if you think about it, as you optimize the 'new' position you will see that it has a lot in common with the 'old' position...
dead quiet
Hum is an indicator of a problem when it manifests in a phono setup, regardless of cartridge output. When I encounter it, I try to see what the preamp does if it has no input on the phono at all; you should get hiss but no hum.If that is not the c...
Unipivot vs Linear Tracking
I've had a THK slide sitting around for a while. Its low sticktion and lack of slop makes it an ideal candidate for a proper TL arm. Its also an ideal size.
tonearm geometry question
Marty, if you want a short answer, for the location you are asking about, you can set it up with 2 null points, but you will have a much larger tracking error at all the other points on the LP. By locating the radial arm at the end of the LTT thes...
