Direct drive/rim drive/idler drive vs. belt drive?
Lew, 5/8" is a pretty big hole. The stomp switches are usually set up for 1/2". We found that the plinth had a lot of effect too- again, it is a resonant signature, and one unique to each 'table. The more you can reduce this issue (along with tigh...
TriPlanar Tips
BTW- Tri was married this last weekend! Congrats to the new couple! In a quote from the groom: "...I expect that things will calm down and get back to normal now" yeah right :)
TriPlanar Tips
Lew, from what I understand the Colibri does not use the standard 1/2" mounting holes. Is that the case? Tri mentioned to me one time that that is why setting up the Colibri on his arm was so difficult. That was several years ago- the problem may ...
Direct drive/rim drive/idler drive vs. belt drive?
Lew, I would look into the switches used on guitar stomp pedals, see: http://tubesandmore.com/click on 'Switches & Footswitchboxes', then P-H493
Why manufactures donĀ“t burn in their amps and ...
We do 90% of the burn-in here in our shop. The last 10% takes the longest time- up to 6-8 weeks depending on the number of hours a day. Especially when you have amps or preamps built up with custom options, doing an extended burn-in is just plain ...
Amp damping factor?
Most speakers do not need a great deal of 'damping' to achieve their design goals. A high damping factor is another way of saying 'low output impedance'. However there are two schools of thought about what is meant by low output impedance! One sch...
I built my own Turntable and here are the results
Lew is right- the tighter the coupling between the arm and the bearing of the platter, the better. Any movement between the two will be interpreted as a coloration, since the only movement should be the needle in the groove.
LETS COMPARE TUBE AND SS AMPS. TECHNICAL
Marakanetz, true enough- but since this **is** the real world, an ideal source exists in dreamland only- we can safely ignore it as a result. So, what is, is tubes and transistors. Either can have a high or low source impedance, and a price is paid...
LETS COMPARE TUBE AND SS AMPS. TECHNICAL
There has been a debate in audio- tube vs transistor- for the last 50 years. The results of the debate are unimportant. What *is* important is understanding that the debate arises from a deeper conflict as described in the links to the Atma-Sphere...
Direct drive/rim drive/idler drive vs. belt drive?
Hiho, for the record, the Empire does not go off speed if properly serviced, and can be expected, once serviced, to run for years without further attention. I have seen the motor angle being so poorly set that the belt engages the wrong part of th...
Direct drive/rim drive/idler drive vs. belt drive?
Lew, I myself think that is a good idea. I agree there are a lot of platter pads out there, as Axel says, its just that most of them are a joke. If you are going to make a decent pad, it should use materials science and physics- like understanding...
Direct drive/rim drive/idler drive vs. belt drive?
If a turntable company has succeeded in making several versions of a turntable, essentially with different drives, while at the same time keeping the platter pad and platter signatures exactly the same, I would agree that the differences one heard...
Direct drive/rim drive/idler drive vs. belt drive?
Jb0194, I think they have advantages if your system will allow them, in controlling warp. Since the platter pad controls the LP's resonance signature, the ring won't do much to help- it will merely insure that the coloration is consistent across t...
Direct drive/rim drive/idler drive vs. belt drive?
Axel, I regard differences in dynamics as a coloration, just like tonality and soundstage. All are **definitely** aspects of platter pad vinyl resonance control (or lack thereof).
Triplanar RCA out to Balanced out for MP-1
Nandric, you speakers are simply in no danger regardless of what you do with the arm. It all has to do with what you do with the volume control :)
