Amp s choices to match with Wilson Sophias ?
The Wilsons have always been tube-friendly. So you have a wide range of tube amps available for the speaker as well.
Why Use Aluminum for a TT Platter?
Aluminum is used for several reasons. The first is that it is non-magnetic. This keeps it from messing with the cartridge. Aluminum is also relatively cheap, as it is one of the most abundant metals. Its also easy to machine. An aluminum platter sh...
Oh how I wish Class D amps ...
Mapman, if a tube amplifier is fully-differential from input to output, it will not have even-ordered harmonics- they will be canceled at every stage throughout the amplifier. The even orders show up when part of the tube amp is single-ended. With...
Magnetization & Demagnetization any conclusions?
K_brown, the Classic Quietex clear vinyl was made specifically so it would not have magnetic noise, since the 'magnetic noise' is supposed to have something to do with what makes the vinyl black. So these demag thingys should have no effect on the ...
Hi efficient speaker, bass problems
They were made for TVs and got phased out in the 1970s. It just so happened that if wired right, they could be operated with low voltage and high current, and so were useful in OTLs. Today they are pretty rare. The closest thing to them is the EL5...
Magnetization & Demagnetization any conclusions?
If there really is a random magnetic field in the LP, it will manifest as noise as the magnetic field is moved past the MC cartridge, much like tape hiss as tape moves past a tape head. However it will be at a much lower level! So if y'all are hear...
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
Halcro, the Empire is equipped with a belt, and an extremely robust drive motor, one that is just about unstoppable. The speed of this machine is so stable that the usual effects of soundstage drift due to speed variation don't seem to exist- its ...
Phase inverting problem
Kirkus is right in that in some ways the phase is preserved- but I think if one looks into the equipment the interest of the designer will not be seen to preserve the absolute phases of the inputs. I've used a lot of boards over the years and serv...
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
Dgob, the problem with the Technics is that it does not have a real plinth. It is built for the platter only. If you have the deluxe base, the material that the arm sits on is something quite different from that of the platter, at least that is th...
Phase inverting problem
Recording engineers do not take note of whether their mixing board or recorders are inverting or not. Nor does it show up in the manuals for such. The simple fact is that a recording may or may not be absolute phase inverted. There is no coin, no d...
How many tube watts for Vandersteen 2's?
IME 60 watts in plenty for the Vandersteen 2s. They are easy to drive with most tube amplifiers. In the case of the M-60 you don't need the ZEROs, in the case of the S-30 I recommend trying it both ways and see.
Hi efficient speaker, bass problems
Weseixas, actually with many tube amps when you increase the load impedance the output power goes *up* not down.In the case of transformer coupled amps, this is because the OPT is more efficient. In the case of OTLs (and especially if its a *small...
Opinions on Mogami Cable?
I know of at least one high end company that marks the Mogami cables up by a factor of 10...
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
Halcro, here is our 'table. We've been making it about 10 years. It looks all the part of an Empire, but looks can be deceiving. The photo is from about 2000 or 2001.http://www.atma-sphere.com/products/208.htmlDgob, I have a little thought experim...
New amp being touted as among the best ever......
Doesn't it all depend ... on ... lots of things, always? It goes against my instincts and experience to assume though that there is only one way (tubes) to make tasty audio soup and do the harmonic balance plus all the rest well. After all, we sent ...
