Ground loop b/w amp and phono stage
Ssayeed, based on what I have read here it sounds like there is a bad ground at the input of the preamp. No cables => no buzz2 different arms => buzzground cheater =>If the above is all true the only other possibility is that *both* tone a...
Amp advice sought for Coincident Total Victory
We have a set of Total Victories- they are an easy load but you really need some power to really make them sing (IMO). 60 watts is plenty.
What amp are you using with your Zu Essences?
Charles1dad, to answer that, if you can, take a look at the posts I have made here on audiogon and see if you come to that conclusion.I don't like being called 'petty' but it may well be that that is the case. But there is more going on here than ...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Pubul57, it could well be that there could be some advantage to that, if your speakers have higher efficiency and your sources have plenty of voltage.
Thunderbolt Pagoda LP now available
Our second LP has been issued on New Ruins Records, available through Mutant Music and Chicago Independent Records.Again it is an all-analog recording, 150gr vinyl mastered at RTI. We used refurbished Western-Electric mic preamps run direct into t...
Why Use Aluminum for a TT Platter?
Copper is the best for platter top! There are problems with any metal for being the top of a platter. The top of the platter should be available as a means of damping the vinyl as it is tracked by the tone arm. Metal is ill-suited to this task.Copp...
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
At low volume levels its not that hard to get a 'table to sound good. Its at high volumes where the rubber hits the road. IMO, the turntable should be unassailable at any volume. I found that once I had sufficient mass and rigidity in the plinth, ...
What amp are you using with your Zu Essences?
Audiofeil's comment about OTLs and ZUs is incorrect. There don't seem to be any OTLs that will not drive the 6 ohm ZUs quite well.
Relate sensitivity/impedance to speaker efficiency
Nnck, First lets look at the two options as if they are both on the Power Paradigm (efficiency, 1 watt 1 meter).Under this model the Acoustic Zen is 90/91db. The other speaker is 84/85db if it is also 4 ohms. If you want a tube amp the latter is g...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Jult52, you have no worries, in fact this is more of an ideal situation (so long as you can get the amp to make satisfying power)- you *want* the amp to have less sensitivity than the maximum level of your source, as this allows you to run the pas...
Nice Tube Preamp for Boulder 1060
Depending on the length of your cables you have a variety of preamp choices. However the balanced line system was conceived with the idea of eliminating audible differences between cables, so if it is done right, length is not an issue either.Most...
Ground loop b/w amp and phono stage
This is a temporary fix, but try getting an AC ground cheater from the hardware store and put it on the AC cord for the phono section. It may be that the phono section has its ground connected right to the wall, which means you have a ground loop....
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
Dgob, any resonance in the arm tower will be a coloration. If the feet prevent the tower from coupling to the base of the platter bearing, that too will be a coloration.
Why Use Aluminum for a TT Platter?
I had a Technics SL-1100. I think it had the distinction of being the first DD machine made. It also had the heaviest platter of any DD machine, including the SP-10 and certainly heavier than any Dual, Garrard, Thorens, or the like. The 'cogging' ...
Relate sensitivity/impedance to speaker efficiency
There are a couple of other things to consider, in addition to the points that Al makes. some are here:http://www.atma-sphere.com/papers/paradigm_paper2.htmlAs I understand it though, both speakers are friendly to tubes. However impedance plays a ...
