Which LPs are on your permanent rotation?
Steve Tibbetts' 2nd LP ('yr') has been stalwart over the last 30-some years as his 4th LP 'Safe Journey'.ELP's 1st LP, self titled (pink Island edition). I seem to never tire of it; same for King Crimson's 2nd LP 'In the Wake of Poseidon', which a...
Anyone listen to Zu Audio's Definition Mk3?
As a point of reference in the past the Definition was a 6-ohm load and inappropriate for the Atma-Sphere S-30 although the M-60 was fine with it. Zu offered the Definition in a 30-ohm edition that by all reports was an excellent combination with ...
Hum from both speakers...This is New Please read.
That does sound like it could be a ground loop problem, but if so it has something to do with the subwoofer. If you unplug the subwoofer from the wall that should manage the hum.If not, then my 2nd theory is that there is a wiring bug in the outpu...
What determines good distortion?
Mapman, the test is simple- put the amp on a speaker load (nearly any load will do) and run the amp up to clipping with the sine wave, and observe the results on a 'scope. Of course others have already done that. Goto Google, click 'Images' then e...
How do we remember 1970s amplifiers?
I had a set of Fulton J-Modulars as well. For a long time I ran them with dual modified Dyna ST-70s monostrapped until I got my own amp going. Fulton was a local so I spent time with him at Bob Fredere's house in Minneapolis, which is where I firs...
What determines good distortion?
The odd-ordered harmonics (above the 3rd) are used by the human ear/brain system to ascertain the volume of the sound being heard. This is pretty important to know if you want your system to sound like real music rather than a hifi.If an amplifier...
Class A amplifiers - which are considered the best
Class A has two modes of execution, A1 and A2. In A1 the output devices conduct all the time and there is no current flowing in the grid circuit (we are talking tubes here). In class A2 the output devices also conduct all the time but there is gri...
Turntable speed accuracy
Servo design in a DD 'table certainly includes the expected mass of the platter. If that changes significantly it sill alter the response of the servo; likely to the underdamped side of things. Many cheaper DD tables have a platter that can be rem...
Through with Buzz.
Sounds like a wire is damaged inside the arm or the arm wiring harness at the very least. As the arm is moved, the buzz comes and goes. So it would be the wire that grounds the arm (black wire) that is having the problem.
A Manufacturer that pays return shipping
Terrybbagit, the fact that manufacturers don't pay for return shipping ('return shipping' meaning that the shipment is going from you to the manufacturer) is quite simple: they are not responsible for where you choose to live. Even so they split t...
Class A amplifiers - which are considered the best
Rleff, The idea was an analog setup that used a feedforward system so that the bias is mapped in sync with the output signal. In effect there would be no 'decision point', merely a minimum level that represents no signal at all- as soon as you hav...
Impedance Matching - Tube Amp/Speakers
If the load is right, bass will not be a problem- that has nothing to do with the amp using EL-34s!
Are Nakamichi amps any good?
The Nakamichi amps had a reputation in the service industry for being unstable and prone to failure. They were not popular on this account even back when they were being made. They sound OK, but they are not the sort of amp that you want to push h...
Class A amplifiers - which are considered the best
I remember being approached by someone in the early 90s that held a patent to a sliding class A bias system (for transistors). As innovative as he is, I don't think Nelson created that. As I recall, it showed up on the Krell amps first. We didn't g...
Bi-amping MBL 101's - combining tube & ss
Actually the mbls are not that hard to drive. 200 watts is plenty of power in most rooms.
