RFI - Turntable Rig
What happens when you have the Whest hooked up to the system, but nothing at its input? Do you still have the RF?
Southwest Technical Products Universal Tiger
If he does repairs, he should have no trouble with this one. The Tiger is a pretty straight-ahead circuit.
Best Platter Material
The best platter pad I have ever seen was made by Warren Gehl, who is currently working at Audio Research. His platter pads are now pushing 20 years old but are still getting good resale prices when they show up.The issue here is the durameter (ha...
Bandwidth question?
Marakanetz, as I mentioned earlier, it does not seem to matter that the speakers lack the bandwidth of the amps. The phase shift that will occur in the amplifier due to bandwidth limitations is something that you hear well within the range of huma...
Bandwidth question?
Glai, there you have it. Our ears are not so sensitive to phase shift at a single frequency, but when a band of frequencies is involved its another matter entirely!
Which is more accurate: digital or vinyl?
I sincerely don't get you when you say..."My personal timbre (again, this is a separate thing from style) will come through, no matter which instrument I am playing on, despite the difference in the timbres of each individual horn. " ????I can ans...
Why amps, pre-amps, integrated amps???
Johnnyb53 has got it right. The power supplies are the big issue- that and the way the grounds are set up. It is very easy to get crosstalk in integrated amps, in a way similar to to the way ground loops occur. It is possible to build an integrated...

I'm sure we could handle it, but any technician that can repair a transistor amp can handle the Tiger as well. However, no sound might be something simple. Have you checked the fuses?
Bandwidth question?
So far I've not seen this mentioned yet, IMO this is one of the most important reasons to have some bandwidth:Phase shift accompanies bandwidth limitations. In general, you can expect phase shift components to manifest to 1/10th the upper cutoff f...
Ref 3 Impedence Mismatch HELP please
Sgr, FWIW, you don't have to go to transistors to run 25 feet of balanced cable to a crossover. You just need a preamp that can do that. Our preamps can drive over 100 feet of cable, and they are all-tube; plus they can drive input impedances as l...

Wow. I've not seen or heard of one of those in decades. I ran a set for several years back in the 70s. They were derelict when I acquired them. What seems to be going on with them?
Ref 3 Impedence Mismatch HELP please
Herman, Bifwynne's suggestion is a good one- Tom is a good guy and knows his stuff. If you install larger coupling caps, the caps themselves will color the sound to a greater degree. The bottom line here though will be that if you use this preamp w...
Balanced connection from pre-amp to amp--Need help
Asian Standard??Originally the balanced line connection standard was pin 1 ground, pin 2 non-inverting and pin 3 inverting. This is now known as the American standard, and was typical of any professional audio equipment made in the US during the 5...
Ref 3 Impedence Mismatch HELP please
The problem here is that the output impedance of the ARC goes higher as the frequency goes lower. If driving a high impedance this is no problem, but a middle impedance like 10K (less than 2000 ohms being 'low impedance'...) is problematic as the ...
capacitor dielectric bias
Liguy, it is very well known in electrolytics. If an electrolytic is used as a coupling cap, the cap must be biased with a DC voltage that is larger than the AC signal it is being used to couple. Electrolytics *really* don't like being reverse-bia...
