World's best Pre-amp for $10K and above?
Charles1dad, I tried real hard but I could never get those MIT caps to sound right to me, if I used them as a coupling cap. If I am not mistaken though, the MIT uses several caps in parallel in a single package. I have found that to be a bad move ...
Tube amp rough guidance sought
Antshrike, you would not be buying speakers for the room, you would be buying speakers to match to the amp. If you have a tube amp in mind a speaker that is more efficient would be a good thing whether you move or not.Duke at Audiokinesis makes sp...
Amp Shutting Down, need help
Sailcappy, I am really sold on the idea that the breaker is at fault. Have you been using it as a power switch? Or is the amplifier designed with it being the power switch?Either way what I would do is replace the breaker... troubleshooting from a...
Another cheater plug thread
Something not mentioned is the sonic issues related to lifting a ground. The problem is a ground loop, you lift the ground and no more hum. This is caused by the fact that some part of the signal chain (amp, preamp) is improperly wired. For example ...
Blackness - how quiet does it need to be?
Blackness has to do with intermodulation distortion. This is a property of all preamps and amplifiers. The lower the IM, the more the unit will be perceived as having a 'black background'. In principle it functions the same way in analog gear as K...
Amp Shutting Down, need help
Hm. You could certainly try it. Anything that might drop the voltage a little would probably sort it out. We have ascertained that the issue relates to overpowering the breaker due to something to do with the incoming AC power. It happens on any o...
Hi pitched hum from TT pre-amp?
Sounds like your tubes are likely shot.
Amp Shutting Down, need help
Jea48, thanks for that note. In that case, I suspect that the DC blocker circuit has developed a malfunction. It would not be missed if the AC line were clean. Its easy enough to test for. There is someone on this forum who makes AC extension outle...
Amp Shutting Down, need help
I don't think the ground is the problem. Here is my theory:Right now I think there might be DC on the line. DC can cause a toroidal transformer to saturate. Now what if its not very much DC, less maybe only about .3 to .5 volts...In standby the am...
Hi pitched hum from TT pre-amp?
If its a loose tube you will get a crackle and possible loss of signal. OTOH a microphonic tube can 'sing' (whistle, whatever you want to call it) and often responds or stops when tapped or subjected to vibration. Such tubes won't sound their best...
World's best Pre-amp for $10K and above?
Audiozen, I can only assume that you did not read the article at the link I posted earlier so here it is again:http://www.atma-sphere.com/Resources/Paradigms_in_Amplifier_Design.phpThe top mega-buck solid state amplifiers all havein common very hi...
Amp Shutting Down, need help
Is the AC cord plugged in on the same side of the line as the preamp and front end of the system?
Hi pitched hum from TT pre-amp?
The complaint sounds like a microphonic tube.
Tube amp rough guidance sought
B&Ws in general are not tube-friendly, although the 805s are probably one of their easier speakers in that regard. The room size is important- the 805s are not particularly efficient.BTW if you want speakers that are easy to afford, easy to dr...
3 preamps with transformer hum, DC on the line?
Its easy enough to eliminate DC on the line. If you have DC, it can cause toroidal transformers to become noisy as the core of the transformer will saturate with very low DC levels. Such DC filters should not adversely affect the bandwidth of the ...
