what is an ideal tube amp
Charles1dad, take a look at this article, it will help in understanding my explanation that follows:http://www.atma-sphere.com/Resources/Paradigms_in_Amplifier_Design.phpFour ohms came in with the transistor- we all know that. However, along with ...
Good amp match for vinatge Vandersteen 2C's?
The first time I heard the 2C was with a very early set of our amps. They were revealing and musical- no troubles making bass either. We did several shows with Vandersteen speakers, using our smaller amps. One time Richard came into our room to ch...
what is an ideal tube amp
If a tube amp with an output transformer has a 16 ohm tap, it will have slightly more power and certainly less distortion when driving 16 ohms. This is because the output transformer is more efficient. In fact it will also exhibit more bandwidth- ...
what is an ideal tube amp
John also has an Atma-Sphere setup, with a fairly well-optioned MP-1. He has had Atma-Sphere amps since 1989 if memory serves.I bought a set of T-3s in 1998. There has been no looking back. They have been updated with the dual woofers, new crossov...
Plinth mass vs. Foundation mass
The coupling between the platter and the tonearm must be exact. If the platter is moving with respect to the arm, the cartridge will interpret that as a signal and a coloration is thus introduced. Thus the plinth should be utterly rigid and devoid ...
Headshell Washers : Nylon or Stainless Steel?
Moonglum, titanium washers get used by high end bicycles all the time.http://www.nylonalloys.co.uk/cgi-bin/shop/nylon-alloys-categories.pl?TITANIUM|METRIC|
Ground Cheater plug or....
Al is correct. This will not be solved by cheating the ground. Grimace, you've not mentioned your speakers; if they have an efficiency of over 100db or if your room is really really quiet this might be perfectly normal.
Headshell Washers : Nylon or Stainless Steel?
Moonglum, there is no need to worry about ground looping the cartridge when mounting it in a tonearm. If mass is an issue, go with titanium washers.I would avoid nylon as the cartridge has to be coupled to the tonearm as rigidly as possible otherwi...
what is the best sounding speakers for under 5000.

Tube biasing question please
The higher initial reading of the set you just installed indicates that they have more transconductance, which is a good thing. It can be an indication of hours but that can't be counted on due to the variance in the tubes themselves.
Ultrasonic Oscillation
Italian, the volume control has nothing to do with the actual volume. With today's super high-output digital sources (a pet peave- there is no reason to have so much output) a 9:00 setting on the volume control might easily clip a lot of amps.IOW ...
D class amps with Soundlab speakers
Mapman, If you are not heating up the amp then you probably have no worries. So you have enough power with your speakers. My rule of thumb with most amps is you want more power than you will be able to use with the speaker you are using. But I have...
Any way to reduce pre-amp noise floor?
Its normal to have a noise floor on any preamp. In this case from the last post by Shoff the noise is apparently not affected by the volume control. So it can be the noise of the line stage and that of the amplifier. A lot depends on how quiet the...
Ultrasonic Oscillation
Italian, one other possibility to consider is that if you have been clipping (overloading your amp with too much volume) then that will also damage tweeters.Usually tweeters only have to handle a few watts but if you overload the amplifiers, the d...
converting Rega to balanced output?
Sweet! Thanks for the tip.
