Cartridge loading Larryi, Jonathan Carr and I are talking about the same thing. The 'ultrasonic' frequency can be in the MHz. Sometimes its easier to think of that as RF which is why I put it that way.
Tube amplifiers and interstage transformers Charles1dad, something that has puzzled me for a long time is the also 'common argument' that triodes are the most linear form of amplification known to man, yet they have more distortion??The fact is that they don't. Try putting a transistor in a...
Question for technicians If you can't get to the switch itself then the cleaner is likely not going to do the job by trying to get it to go through the shaft bushing for the switch!Your best option at this point is actually pretty simple- operate the switch vigorously to ...
Cartridge loading This has been covered elsewhere but seems to need repetition. Most Low Output Moving Coil cartridges are unaffected directly by the load, other than the output that have if the load value is too low. But we hear differences at times- so the load i...
Tube amplifiers and interstage transformers Based on theory, measurements and the viewpoint of designers of solid state components, tubes should`nt even be a consideration for best sound aspirations. They`re too colored, too much distortion, outdated and measure poorly. Heaven forbid those compt...
Tube amplifiers and interstage transformers I've not found that transformers contribute to transparency. IME they always detract from it. Bandwidth aside that has been the main reason I avoid them if possible.Distortion is however a main reason people will often prefer transformers, as thes...
Sick and tired of hum-please read Invstbiker, if I were you I would start by disconnecting the preamp from the amp and see if the amp hums on its own.300bs don't make a lot of power, so they have to be on efficient speakers. For this reason, they have to be hum-free. If, not, I wo...
RCA to balanced True, but then you are dealing with the limitations imposed by the transformer.
Cables for low power amps and Horns? Purist Audio Design would be another. I've used them to very good effect.
New Preamp Suggestion If the Classe has balanced inputs, you might want to consider a preamp with balanced outputs. This works better for the amp and the cables involved.
Tannoy Westminster amp matching question. The underlying assumption you imply is that high powered solid state has a sound - well that's not true, its going to be speaker dependent.I find the main 'sound' of most transistor amps the is the slight presence of odd-ordered harmonics, which m...
Tube pre, SS amp incompatibility, which amp 2 use? Abucktwoeighty, do you have a Digital Volmeter (DVM)? If so you might want to measure the voltage at the output of the Jolida with the volume turned down. If its anything other than 0volts, you have a problem that should be fixed. If the preamp emp...
Top ten tube preamps Nice work! Does that do low output moving coil?
Looking for a power conditioner/regenerator/filter Jallen, just FWIW but the big spike usually occurs when the power goes out, not when it comes back on. Its the same principle that makes the spark plugs run in a car.
Question for technicians *Sparing* use of Deoxit (DN5) will work fine. Keep it away from circuit boards if you can. Its more powerful than the Radio Shack cleaner and tends to have more capacitive effects (although slight) from what I can tell. |
