Best Tube Amp/Preamp combination with Quad 2805s
Bruce, Its not quite as extreme as that :)You do get some capacitive phase angle. But most ESLs have a matching transformer too, so you have some inductive issues as well. Overall though other than impedance, all ESLs tend to be fairly benign in t...
Why aren't new vacuum tubes as good as old ones?
Wolf, I know some of the techs at ARC. They use the KT-120s, but apparently really have to weed through them as many of them arc (no pun intended) prematurely. However its a pretty neat tube- lotta power handling. One way to look at it is they (Ru...
Why aren't new vacuum tubes as good as old ones?
I'd love to if they made tubes that we use.
Passive Preamp Recommendations?
You might be surprised to learn that there is not a lot of difference between really expensive and really inexpensive passive controls, when used in some type of outboard box.You will find that the things that play the biggest role in the sound ar...
Bypassing A Preamp With Volume Pot In Amp
If you have the control installed in the amp this works quite well. Switching the interconnects will get old after a while though.
Best Tube Amp/Preamp combination with Quad 2805s
Bruce, The answer is that the impedance of most loudspeakers relates to how the speaker behaves inside a box, along with its crossover components. An ESL OTOH has its impedance curve based on a capacitor (IOW, a high impedance at bass frequencies, ...
variance of +/- 10 Hz with 1 kHz test tone
You might see how it performs after its been running for 6 hours.
Power tubes as drivers -- Line Magnetic
Dkidknow, yes, the Merlins are an easy to drive speaker. I think that is the most popular speaker used with our M-60 amplifiers.
Why aren't new vacuum tubes as good as old ones?
I have to say we have had extremely good luck with the run-of-the-mill Chinese 6SN7. We've been using it for about 14 years. Its not the best sounding tube, but its not bad, and they've been pretty reliable.
Amplifier Input Impedance
Audiolabyrinth, if you have an amplifier, tube or solid state, with a 100KOhm input impedance, any preamp tube or solid state will work with it. The general rule of thumb is that the source have an output impedance that is no more than 1/10th of t...
Power tubes as drivers -- Line Magnetic
We operate our amps in A2 mode as well. Fisher in the 1950s that made the first A2 amplifiers that I ever heard of.
Why aren't new vacuum tubes as good as old ones?
The company is RCH Labs. phone number is 775.410.8798
Power tubes as drivers -- Line Magnetic
Sounds like the amplifier operates class A2. Otherwise one would not need such a hefty driver tube.
Why aren't new vacuum tubes as good as old ones?
I have high hopes for this venture. It sounds like they will be able to make tubes that are even better than the NOS classics.
Amplifier Input Impedance
But the real question is, what kind of source impedance should an amplifier designer reasonably expect to see from the driving source? And in a world where only the wimpiest of preamplifiers have an issue with a 10K-50K load, how much extra cost a...
