Tube amp to drive Dali ms5
This speaker is not the best combination with tubes as it is low impedance (4 ohms) and low efficiency (86 db; their website claims a sensitivity of 89 db, but when you correct for the 4 ohm impedance and calculate for power rather than voltage th...
EL34 & 6L6 characteristics
We've gotten the best feedback from our customers on the Amperex Bugle Boy 7316. One of the best 12AU7 types out there.
Getting the Upgrade Bug Again
Yes, quite often B&Ws are not a good match with tubes, in particular the models with dual woofer arrays. But if you still have a hankering to show off the capabilities of a tube amplifier, try a set of Audiokinesis loudspeakers. They are reason...
High value, high efficiency speakers for SET amps
4)I note that John Atkinson states in his measurements of the older de Capo i version of the speaker that "the speaker's low-frequency tuning is actually a little on the overdamped side." If the same holds true of Rebbi's BE version, its sonics co...
EL34 & 6L6 characteristics
You may find that the small (voltage amplifier and driver) tubes in the amp make a bigger difference than the power tubes, assuming that the power tubes are good when compared.
"Warm Sounding" Solid State Amplifiers
There are quite a few "great" sounding SS amps, now, and, as far back as the late 70's!One of those was the H/K Citation 16. If you found one though, expect to get the filter caps replaced.
Thinking about buying a different tube preamp...
If you can find a used Atma-Sphere MP-3 you should be able to pick one up for that price. Dual outputs are available and the phono section is entirely balanced-differential.
"Warm Sounding" Solid State Amplifiers
^^ :) so you are saying you can tell how an amplifier sounds from its specs? Like many analogies there is a certain point where it falls apart. I find that if anything, there is an inverse relationship with THD (higher will likely sound better) a ...
Sound Labs
The new backpanel has been a welcome improvement, making the speaker an easier load and thus sounding better with both tube and transistor amps.FWIW they do not benefit from the ability of the amp to double power as the impedance is cut in half, b...
Don't know what's wong with me
First it was the 300b. Then it was the 2A3. Next was the type 45... Its not actually the tubes themselves, its the bandwidth with the output transformer involved that is why the lower powered tubes sound better. Theoretically the best sounding SET...
"Warm Sounding" Solid State Amplifiers
^^ The number on the bit of paper is a good example of the Emperor's New Clothes. We all know this- can you definitively say how an amplifier will sound by looking at it specs? We all know we have to take the amp home and play it to see if it will ...
"Warm Sounding" Solid State Amplifiers
Csontos, it does not matter if it is live or reproduced, our ears listen for those harmonics (which are always there) regardless. We can't change that!Quite simply, the application of physics to design equipment to honor our human hearing/perceptu...
High value, high efficiency speakers for SET amps
This is very interesting, Atmasphere. Is this true for SEP as well? True for a Dynamo 34SE?That was an insightful observation.Thank you!The 20% thing applies to SETs, which typically make about 10% THD at full power. However below about 20% their ...
"Warm Sounding" Solid State Amplifiers
Csontos, thank-you for your reasoned reply. I thought you might like to hear a number: 600, as in 600V/uS, the risetime of the output section of our amps. Tubes don't have to be slow nor dull any leading edge transients.I agree with Mapman- there ...
Rock and roll speakers?
That should make them fine for whatever you throw at them as long as you have enough power.I use Classic Audio Loudspeakers, which are 98 db and go from 20Hz to 35KHz. This allows me to run less power. Right now I am running a set of our M-60s and...
