Is no preamp really better that a good preamp?
George makes a good point- if a preamp robs you of transparency and detail, its not helping! The same can be said of an improperly applied passive control. In both cases, audition is necessary. It is not correct to say that all active preamps take...
Is no preamp really better that a good preamp?
A preamp line section has 4 functions:1) control volume2) select an input3) add any needed gain4) control the interconnect cableThe two latter functions are not done by passive controls of any sort. That 4th function is also poorly understood, not...
Any thoughts on passive v. active speakers?
Rogerstillman, FWIW the MA-1s are perfectly comfortable driving 8 ohms and even 4 ohms in some cases- which is why they work nicely on Sound Labs and Quads.
Tubes and their problems
These days arc-over is a frequent symptom of power tube failure. They can also fade away. If you see the silver that is on the inside of the glass turn brown or transparent, it means that the tube is gassy and will run hotter and with less output....
Any thoughts on passive v. active speakers?
If you decide you need more power (or want more resolution, or whatever), an active speaker means you have to sell the speaker and start over.
Tubes and their problems
The idea that a microphonic tube is one that is going to blow is incorrect. Microphonics is a construction issue but not an indication of imminent failure. @ Joeylawn, its likely that only one of the tubes you replaced was actually the one giving ...
Amplifier for Tannoy Turnberry GR
The Tannoys have been very tube-friendly. We have a lot of customers using them with our amplifiers (which also use 6AS7Gs). The speaker is rated at 93 db and is 8 ohms. Unless you have a very small room you will want some power to drive this spea...
Tube Amp for Martin Logan Speakers
Hard to say Al, he's not said what phenomena he ran into with any specificity. Paul Speltz is very supportive though and often has suggestions for how to sort things out should one run into problems.
Tube Amp for Martin Logan Speakers
^^ Did you speak to Paul about it? Your experience is unusual (although much depends on the amp too).
Infinity IRS Betas Make Loud Noise When On
What goes into protection mode- the amplifier?
Tube Amp for Martin Logan Speakers
Yet they sound perfect and well extended when driven by my big current pushing solid state monoblock amps.'Current pushing'? This sounds like a misconception to me.Again, Martin Logan is specific about the amplifier to use with their speaker becau...
Tube Amp for Martin Logan Speakers
Hvowell, said earlier:Now is the reason this type of amp works is (assuming the speaker has a sensitivity (SPL) of 85db/1W into 8 ohms).25W into 32ohms = 85db.50W into 16ohms = 85db1W inot 8 ohms = 85db2W into 4 ohms = 85db4W into 2 ohms = 85dbso ...
how much current does a yba 600 power amp provide.
The amp can make 300 watts into 4 ohms. The power formula is Power = Resistance x current(squared). So if 300 watts, divide by 4 (if that is the impedance of the speaker) and the result is 8.66Amps.You may see much higher current ratings advertised ...
Custom Bridge Rectifier on a preamp power supply
Actually I mentioned why that is in my first post on this thread.
Custom Bridge Rectifier on a preamp power supply
^^ I was trying to keep my response simple!I saw a really simple solution that involved the use of a tube rectifier, which due to its linearity does not induce swept inductance issues. It was bypassed with a set of ordinary diodes. So when the dio...
