CDs Vs LPs
No amount of money spend on beefy turntables and complex tonearms will produce the dynamic range of which the LP is incapable.?? Signal to Noise Ratio: LP 50db, CD 90dbFrequency Response: LP 20-20kHz, CD 20-22kHz (a tie)Total Harmonic Distortion: ...
KT88 for deep bass ?
The kind of tube has little to do with how it plays bass- all tubes work to DC.The bandwidth of the output transformer, and the way the tube matches to it is a different matter.
Horns: Why don't they image well?
Horns tend to give a wall of sound, but rarely can image pinpoint in the horizontal and vertical and depth like the above ones mentioned can. This statement is simply false. It may be true for some earlier horns as the throat design and curvature ...
Why do people buy preamps if they can directly connect amp to stereo source/phone/PC/tv?
^^ In addition to that, a good preamp provides control over the interconnects and in so doing, allows the system to be more neutral. This function seems to be the least understood, but seems to be pretty important, otherwise the system only sounds...
Phono stage w/automatic Load-Impedanance.
But which step-up ratio to choose? The least amount of stepup that gives you the gain you need. That will minimize the sonic fingerprint that all SUTs have. Also pay attention to proper loading of the SUT to minimize coloration. Talk to Luhdahl ab...
Empire Turntable Parts
My apologies- I had this confused with an earlier machine. The LED is a basic type- nothing particularly special. If you felt like it you could put a different color in if you liked. The damping fluid is a silicone damping grease. Something simila...
Horns: Why don't they image well?
Duke has made some great comments addressing the topic, answering it to its fullest. If you don't get the nerdy part of it, it translates as:"A well designed horn images as well as any other speaker".Having made a good number of my own recordings, ...
Atma-Sphere in CO?
The GTs will work in all but the front position. Just use the Chinese 6SN7 in that location and you'll be fine. The fundamental difference I suspect you'll hear is that the Franks have a more lush sound while the M-60 is more neutral. The differen...
Class D is just Dandy!
We've not put a lot of thought into what embodiments the amps will take, although an integrated seems likely. Probably some sort of power amp too. I think the amp is likely to be less than $4k.
Atma-Sphere in CO?
If its an older amp updated to Mk3, the tube layout might be different. So, in the latest iteration, the tubes in the rear beneath the meter on either side are the most important to the sound. The one in the middle is next most important. In the ver...
Preamp Advice for my System
Your amplifier has a balanced input. The BAT is a tube unit- the others are not- do you have a preference in that regard?FWIW as far as I can tell, the BAT does not support the balanced standard. There are tube preamps that do.
Mild hum/buzz preamp issue?
Turn the setup on, but try carefully picking up the phono preamp and moving it. It may be sitting in a hum field of a power transformer or the like. If the hum changes, then you need to find a different place to put the phono section.
Class D is just Dandy!
I don't find good digital amps bright or fatiguing today. What's a 'digital amp'??Surely not a class D- I thought this thread was class D only ;)
Autoformers, The Benefits in matching amp to speaker
Since we are developing a class D maybe I can chip in.The filter is there to reduce the amplitude of the switching component; IOW the switching frequency of the amplifier which is present at the output of the amp. The switching frequency is never ...
Is pre-amp getting killed?
Even if you have only digital a preamp is still useful; one way is if you want to run your interconnect cables a long way to the amplifiers (which might be sitting by the speakers with short speaker cables). Many digital products have poor volume ...
