what pre amp for ATC SCM 40v2 spkrs + 250.5 Pass Labs pwr amp
There aren't vintage tube preamps that support the standard, as they are all single-ended. The oldest tube preamps that support the standard were made by us- we made the first balanced line preamps back in 1989. IIRC Rowland was the second to make...
what pre amp for ATC SCM 40v2 spkrs + 250.5 Pass Labs pwr amp
So a transformer-coupled design would be more desirable on this front?Obviously the design of the transformer is paramount, but in a nutshell, yes, if you can get the bandwidth. FWIW the venerable Ampex 351-2 (which is a studio tape machine from t...
what pre amp for ATC SCM 40v2 spkrs + 250.5 Pass Labs pwr amp
No. The variable is what is used to couple the output of the preamp to the amp. If a coupling capacitor is used you can expect the output impedance to rise as frequency goes down. There are zero feedback designs that have a ruler flat output imped...
what pre amp for ATC SCM 40v2 spkrs + 250.5 Pass Labs pwr amp
Due to the fact that solid state amps tend to have a lower input impedance, many tube preamps will not make the best bass into them, even though as transistors go, the Pass Labs amps are quite moderate. The thing to look at is the output impedance ...
Filter Capacitance
How does a person know if they are making a high current, high watt amp, or not?The first thing to understand here is that power, current and voltage have a direct relationship; 1 watt = 1 Amp x 1 Volt   That's called the Power formula, and like O...
Short List of Amps I prefer over the Pass Labs XA25 or INT 25
It is! But still audible as brightness.
Short List of Amps I prefer over the Pass Labs XA25 or INT 25
Two class D Cherry amplifiers that i use now (a small integrated Maraschino and a larger Megamaraschino) do reproduce with little distortion, clear and detailed as far as i can see. Class D might be the one way out of this. The issue is somethin...
Advise on Long Phono Cable run
You probably know that very long microphone cables are common at performance venues. @bommerbillone  The reason this works for microphones and not cartridges is pretty important! Microphones are typically driving an input transformer which is prop...
Recommended Speaker List for Atma-Sphere OTL Amplifiers.
Question is will they drive high efficiency horns like the current klipsch heritage line. I’ve currently been trying  some modded heresy 3s with the thought to move to the new Heresy 4, Cornwall 4. Or La Scala in the near future. @glennewdickW...
What would you buy
Tube amp sound is dominated by the output transformersas for efficiency, so often higher output is just trash - out of phase junk that counts as output. Both statements above are not really accurate. What about OTLs- they have no output transformer...
Best Preamp round $8000
@topfinadv  Are you looking for balanced or single-ended?
SUT vs. Phono preamp
If you are on a budget I would go with an SUT, if you plan to use a low output cartridge. If budget is no concern, I would go with a good phono section capable of low output cartridge operation. There is more than just noise to be concerned about....
Restored Rek-O-Kut L-34 Available Locally - Any Opinions on This Table Appreciated
IIRC this is an idler drive and the motor is notorious for needing a warm-up before it goes to the right speed. In addition, it lacks a plinth and so needs to be mounted on a base. Usually wood is used because it looks nice, but this allows the ba...
Advise on Long Phono Cable run
The problem here isn't that the length, so much as it is capacitance! Even with a balanced connection, the physics are a bit different than it is with a microphone; the capacitance of the cable and the inductance of the cartridge make a tuned circ...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
WRT to platter mats, the concept that materials cannot absorb/attenuate vibration is not correct. @antinn I suspect you misread my post, as you and I are on the same page w.r.t this statement; it is the same point I was making (or at least was at...
