My take on subjective vs. objective @edcyn why is the stuff my wife cooks (she's the cyn in edcyn) so much better than the stuff I attempt? Maybe she adds love as an ingredient. Or maybe she's just a better cook. You're lucky she'll cook for you!
My take on subjective vs. objective @czarivey When I say "ears alone" I am suggesting that the ears are working and attached to a conscious living person who is using them to listen, but they can’t see or otherwise know what equipment they are listening to. However, ears can do a...
My take on subjective vs. objective @djones51 You need to think a little more. I’m working on it! @cd318 Therefore I would argue that no sighted comparison can ever be called objective. Many experiments have also previously suggested as such. I would argue that sighted co...
What Digital to Digital Converter Do You Use? Why? I use a Behringer Ultramatch SRC2496 because I have it, it still works, and it provides me with the ability to convert the toslink output on my source to AES/EBU input on my digital crossover. I like the level meters and pretty indicator lights. I...
Where do you want your system to go when you go? This is something I've thought about since building enormous DIY corner horns. A lot of resources got poured in to them and they make me happy for now. When I go I hope they don't go to landfill. They don't have the benefit of a famous maker's nam...
What is your take on high efficient speakers vs. low efficient speakers? Agreed this is an excellent thread! The reason for my love for high efficiency is still a bit of a mystery for me. I've been thinking a lot about directivity being a big factor - a better direct to reflected sound ratio than a typical lower effici...
What is your take on high efficient speakers vs. low efficient speakers? @phusis wrote: The EV horns of mine both have a diffraction slot and sharp edges at the mouth area, and so may set the alarms ringing in many a horn-audiophiles’ head, but they actually sound very smooth after being properly implemented with me...
Go get out your pitchforks, I’ve done a sacrilegious thing. . . My 2 cents on readjusting the EQ for different recordings - I've had little luck with that. I consider that a good thing. When I get the system response correct pretty much everything sounds better.
Differences between models of expensive vs inexpensive DACs @jjss49 That's what I'd expect - the cheaper dacs would be more colored in various ways while the more expensive dacs would be approaching the same ultimate standard. Years ago I saw a comparison of the exact same studio shot made with two brands ...
Differences between models of expensive vs inexpensive DACs @soix I agree there’s more to a DAC than just the DAC chip but won’t the chip ultimately be the limiting factor assuming everything else is executed to perfection? I’m of the understanding that the companies who manufacture high end DACs are not ...
Differences between models of expensive vs inexpensive DACs Thanks for the responses. It seems like there may be convergence among many designs as they reach the performance limits of the DAC chips they're based on. There may be some outliers going for a specific modification to the sound in the output sta...
Differences between models of expensive vs inexpensive DACs @lordmelton I assume you have a half way decent system and can hear differences between DACs. Have you ever listened to entry level DACs through your system? If so, do you notice similar issues with them?
What are we objectivists missing? Objectivists are just subjectivists calling out nonsense objective claims made by some subjectivists.
What are we objectivists missing? To answer the OP post, all evidence suggests that under properly controlled conditions we do know how to measure audio signals in a way that accounts for the limits of human hearing. In uncontrolled, sighted settings there are a huge number of var...
What are we objectivists missing? I'm totally for people sharing their subjective preferences. I take them seriously and accept that they really do prefer the equipment they say they do under the conditions they are using it. If they don't care about how measurements might correla... |
