The "Snake Oil" Trope
Is it important to know which cable is in use in order to perceive the difference?
Electromagnetic fields. Be forewarned, this involves science...
EMW you say. What pray tell are EMW? I presume ElectroMagnetic Waves.
Electromagnetic fields. Be forewarned, this involves science...
It helps to illustrate the effects of EMW on their surroundings. Helps to shed light on why things that measure the same, may not sound the same. Like, cables... How does it illustrate why things might measure the same but not sound the same?
Learning to Listen: Neurological Evidence
It was listening to the XLO Test CD track Poor Boy that triggered my awareness, of what I was hearing from some of the better CD players and amps. They were less etched and grainy than mine, but it took playing this all analog recording to make th...
Two channel and home theater room under construction
AFAIK, resilient channel is for isolating noise, not for improving room acoustics. That is generally correct, although at ASC we do use resilient channel in conjunction with constrained layer damping to allow walls and ceilings to act as giant ...
Bad recordings and high end audio
His roommate  was in a band i mixed sound for…the GE system reigned supreme some four years later… Well at least he liked what he had, and it was cheap! Lucky chap, I say.
Bad recordings and high end audio
Be careful here. It should read: Good recordings will sound better and poor recordings will sound a lot better than they would on a bad system. This is more in line with what I think a good system should do. I've had systems that make some reco...
Bad recordings and high end audio
If you want a speaker that sounds every bit as good as a Maggie, and then some, AND is super easy to drive, listen to this guy. https://youtu.be/7RxRTFx6Cd0?t=342 Bear in mind he loves Maggies.  Thanks for that video link. I enjoyed that inter...
When are people going to wake up and realize listening is a skill?
The proof is in the pudding. Read the comments. https://systems.audiogon.com/systems/8367 I read the comments. Any specific comments you'd like to point out?
When are people going to wake up and realize listening is a skill?
Driving skills are easily assessed with measurable tests. Listening skills can also be tested. If someone claims to have perfect pitch, we can test that. If they claim they can identify extremely low levels of distortion, we can test that. If they...
So how much do you think the placebo effect impacts our listening preferences?
I love a good audio placebo effect - especially if it's cheap. I know I'm susceptible to my audio perception being amazingly transformed simply by being told something about the sound source or given a suggestion of what I should be hearing. Ever ...
So how much do you think the placebo effect impacts our listening preferences?
From what I've heard about pain killing placebos is that they don't actually work when measuring pain objectively - which is usually done with a range of motion test. A person on a placebo will say they feel better and the pain is less bothersome,...
klipshorn speakers
They don't do super deep bass, but they will play very loud without effort. I added a pair of 15" direct radiator subwoofers to a pair of K-horns years ago. my die-hard horn-loaded-only friend was impressed with the extension. I think I crossed th...
Need opinions on ceiling reflections
That's a great looking room! I think you are probably right about that earlier ceiling bounce on the left having a noticeable effect.  Fiberglass as noromance suggested is more effective. 2" thick Owens Corning 703 should be enough to test it out....
Ok, but does your audio gear have rotons (metamaterials)?
Very interesting. I'd never heard of a roton. It'll be interesting to see what can be done with these through engineering.  When I was in high school the hope was for room temperature superconductors to change everything. Didn't happen but superco...
