It depends on the attenuator in your dac. As long as that is analogue rather than digital there will be no bit loss and consequently no advantage from the preamp

Using digital volume attenuation is very lossy: you are much better off using a passive preamp.

This depends on the size of your room as well as your ceiling. A small room with an undamped ceiling will require maximum shaginess, whereas a larger room (>300sqft) with a somewhat damped ceiling will require only wall to wall thin carpeting. ...

@majorc, you are right, however: a passive avoids the additional lossiness of a digital attenuator. Running the Dac at max output reduces the impact of the mismatch
