Digital amps overhyped ?
I have the Gilmore Raven and it is class D modified Icepower, but with a massive analog power supply. I could not be happier with it - it's fed by a Supratek Chenin tube preamp.
Preamp or A/V receiver???
Gold-plated connectors are meaningless as an indicator of quality, they are everywhere these days. A good preamp will kill an A/V receiver every time, but I'm not sure that the Adcom qualifies as a good preamp - as a tuner/preamp, it is more like ...
Preamp Deal of the Century
Picked up a pair of NOS Tung-Sol 5881 (6L6WGB) tubes for $25.00 at an antique radio swap meet this weekend. They have light brown bases and look to be 1950s vintage. The seller said they tested new, and they looked perfect, so I went for it. I've ...
Balanced or Unbalanced?
To add to my previous post (too quick on the submit button), an additional disadvantage of dual beam systems is that you halve the power of your source to create the twin beams - in some cases that creates an unacceptable loss in sensitivity to lo...
Balanced or Unbalanced?
No offense to the balanced proponents, but there seems to me to be an aspect that is not often discussed about balanced systems. To be truly balanced, you must have the equivalent of two systems, which are then compared to each other in some way (...
Can a preamp's gain be lowered?
Since your preamp uses 6SN7s and you say you are comfortable with DIY, you might want to try something similar to the modification I made to my Supratek Chenin preamp. I built two adapters that let me use 7193 (aka 2C22) single triodes instead of ...
Class D amp with Tube Preamp Combo?
Guidocorona, you left out the Gilmore from your list. In my evaluation, the Gilmore blew the NuForce Ref 9 SE V2 completely and utterly out of the water. I'm sure it was just an oversight...
Class D amp with Tube Preamp Combo?
I have the Supratek Chenin tube preamp (modified to use 7193 tubes instead of 6SN7) running into the Gilmore Raven Class D amp, powering Zu Druids/Mini Method sub. I think it sounds great! Crisp, clean and very powerful.
Preamp Deal of the Century
I've been listening to the Ken-Rad 7193s in my Chenin for about a month and one half now, and I decided to try an experiment last night. After listening to a few songs with the 7193s in place, I switched back to my RCA grey glass 6SN7s for compari...
What Caps For My Tuner
Oh, I forgot. I also replaced the three-section PS electrolytic cap with a brand new replacement from Antique Electronic Supply. They are manufactured today using the old equipment used to make the originals. It fit perfectly and works great - muc...
What Caps For My Tuner
I just re-capped my 1960 Sherwood S-2000 tube tuner, and I replaced all the old GoodAll paper caps with Sonicap GenI caps, except for the output coupling cap, which is an Auricap (I also increased the value of this cap, resulting in improved bass ...
Channel Islands XDC-2 and PS Audio PPP
The PPP does nothing to remove DC, and in fact does not do the complete AC to DC to AC conversion either. I have a PPP and also an XDC-2 for DC filtering. I have it hooked up: wall to PPP to XDC-2 to amp, as recommended by PS Audio.
What happened to the AM/FM tuner???
I recently purchased a 1960 Sherwood S-2000 tube tuner for $15 at an antiques store. I replaced the broken dial string and recapped it with Sonicaps and 1 Auricap (output coupling cap) and it sounds Great! It's mono, but I really don't miss the st...
Preamp Deal of the Century
National Union vs RCA vs Ken-Rad 7193 tubes. Since I have converted my Chenin to 7193s, I have been evaluating the different brands of 7193s available (in addition to enjoying the great sound!). Let me say that they are all excellent tubes, but th...
