Is it possible for a record to be too loud? What's the gain you're using with your cartridge? 1.05 mV is quite high for a MC cart and would overload the phono stage at most MC gain settings. If a record is cut hot on top of it, it would only exacerbate the problem.
Back on Black: LED ZEP 1-3 I'm surprised to hear some people think "Mothership" sounded good. To me it was unlistenable. It was mastered ridiculously low and sounded so anemic an Enya record would have more kick and dynamic drive. I found it impossible to bear a full side t...
Looking for advice on these speakers My post may be better suited for the amplifier forum, but since it is related to this discussion, I hope you'll indulge me. My 180-watt tube monoblocks have a switch for ultralinear and triode operation. When I first got them a few years ago, I se...
Looking for advice on these speakers Thank you, gentlemen, for all your input. I have to say, I'm a little bit surprised reading opinions about Daedalus speakers as they are appreciatively more efficient than Coincident speakers. Seems they should be a better match for low-power amps...
Cat-O-meter I hope your cat is declawed for your speakers' sake. One minute of inattention can cost you a driver. I learned the hard way several years ago and will never make this mistake again. I'll stick to measuring audio quality with my own ears :)
Looking for advice on these speakers Thank you all very much for an excellent advice; it's greatly appreciated. To answer the questions posed, right now I'm leaning toward a 300B SET amp, and actually considering the very amp Charles has, i.e., the Frankenstein from Coincident. I've a...
Turnable database with TimeLine Halcro,I just watched your video of the Raven, and I must say I am puzzled by the speed changes. What's causing it? Assuming the VTF is stable, as it should be, why would the turntable speed up as the tonearm tracks toward the spindle?
Turnable database with TimeLine I disagree. The Timeline measures the speed accuracy AND constancy with each rotation of the platter. How much more do you want or need? I understand Tonywinsc's point as a matter of theoretical discussion and extreme obsession, but if constant sp...
Turnable database with TimeLine Lewm,After reading this thread for weeks now, this is exactly my question, and what I have not seen addressed in any of the posts so far. If it has been addressed, my apologies. If a turntable slows down for a very brief moment due to the stylus dr...
Turnable database with TimeLine Perhaps you should buy a tonearm with hydraulic action lifting and lowering...as all my six arms have?No human can lower the cartridge more gently that these.... :-)Halcro, Perhaps I wasn't clear in my post. I actually do have a tonearm with a dam...
Turnable database with TimeLine Damn that Led Zeppelin IV album is warped. I would not play it without a periphery ring. Also, watching Halcro's videos, it's interesting how some audiophiles just drop the cartridge on the record. I lower my Delos as gently as I possibly can. See...
speed stability +1 Benjie. The SDS definitely does make a difference. I recently had to remove it from my system to have it serviced in the middle of a listening session, and although the speed of my Classic was still incredibly stable and accurate without the SD...
Stylus force digital scales I meant "Shure" scales. My apologies for the misspelling.
Stylus force digital scales I would advise against the Sure scale. I happened to have two identical Sure scales and they were very off against each other. Will never trust them again. I currently use an APTP445 scale, which is digital and cheap (more or less $10 on ebay), bu...
VPI bearing oil/grease? Stringreen,VPI uses Super Lube. At least that's what Jack sent me for my Classic. |
