If you had to make this decision....
I would recommend auditioning the Levinson 380S. I had a 38S and upgraded it. The two aren't even close in comparison--I probably would have gotten rid of the 38S had I not upgraded it.
Help with speaker placement
Stereophile Guide to Home Theater did an article sometime last year on speaker placement, standing waves, room dimensions, and placement. It gave you all the tools to get to a very good starting point. Unfortunately it's pretty difficult to use. T...
Snake oil and tweaks that work!
Albert, where can you get the TI shield and the Fiberglass brush? Is Rush on the web?
"Protocols" of record cleaning
You might check Listener Magazine November/December 2000 issue, if you can find a copy. There's a fairly large section devoted to just this topic. There's also a fairly wide range of methods used. Most use a VPI cleaning machine, all the time, but...
Snake oil and tweaks that work!
Marbles under amplifiers. I took 2 aluminum plates per amp and had them routed so that 4 marbles could be sandwiched between them. They can move slightly, but still have a ridged mass supporting them. I'm using this with Levinson Reference 20 amps...
Stylus Cleaners?
I've also used LP#9 and Stylast. Both with good results. Stylast is proported to be a preservative reducing the friction when playing an album. It can give a build up, so how it is applied is very important. I don't use the Last brush, but rather ...

Phono Cable
The siltech is very good, and pretty reasonable. Less than the Hovland, and the grounding scheme is so much better. I reduced the noise floor dramatically and increased dynamics and soundstaging quite a bit at the same time. Mine is an older model...
BetterCables.com - anybody have exp.?
I've used both the component and composite video cables. I have a very high resolution front projection system and have found these to be as good or better than the Audioquest video 2 cables I had been using. For the money I think they are hard to...
SWANS DIVA 6.1 SPEAKERS
My neighbor recently bought the Diva 5.1s. I was very impressed. Very good build quality, cosmetics, and sound. I don't think I've heard a $2k speaker that sounded this good. Also, his room is HUGE!! 25 foot tall ceilings and 25 x 35 feet. To my a...
Audiophile portable CD an oxymoron?
I also agree with the non-skip circuit. However, if you turn it off (if that's an option) it sounds better. Still, I wish someone would come up with a better portable. I haven't tried the panasonic--but if headroom recommends it--it's probably pre...
Best "Bookshelves" for $500? new or used
I have a pair of the B&W 601 (previous version, not the current one). I agree they do sound a little bright and edgy. I also own a pair of Epos EP12s which I bought used for about $550. I enjoy them much more than the B&Ws. They are smooth...
Software for CD-Recording
I've been using Adaptec CD-Creator which came with an external HP CD Writer plus (USB port believe it or not). Most of what I do is complilations from my CD's for travel purposes. I have been told that the media does make a difference, but have no...
Best cables for electrostats?
If you like the Audioquest Crystal you might look at one of their higher end cables. Short lengths in the previous AudioTruth line are readily available used. There are some cautions: Argent can be very good, but is a little shy in the bass and ca...
Frequency Spectrum Analyzer Software
Thanks for the current input. This is for a high resolution system. The active eq is only for the bass (it's bi-amped, so any added noise is limited to the bottom end only). I'm currently using a McIntosh EQ, but may upgrade to a TACT. Accuphase i...
