How do you pay? Why?
My post office won't cash in USPS money orders because they never have enough money on hand to do it. Then my bank holds them for 5 business days... So USPS money orders are no good for me anymore.
How do you pay? Why?
My bank now holds everything for 5 business days. They have had several issues with fraud.... MOs or CCs are no better than personal checks anymore. I prefer paypal since there is no hold and you don't need a pile of MOs to send lots of money.Arthur
Frequency range vs frequency response
All systems in the world have a finite bandwidth and so any input is subjected to nonlinear effects somehow. The output is the "response" of the input according to the system so that is where the name comes from. The range is a reading of the resp...
McIntosh MC252 vs. MC352
I have heard both a few times but never side-by-side... I feel that the 252 is a little faster and a little more detailed in the top end. The 352 is quite smooth and sounds more effortless but the 252 is more "hifi" overall without being cold and ...
bi-amp with a tube amp and SS
Oh - I just realized you said tubes on the LOW freq! That does not make sense to me. Put the tubes on the highs and keep the high-damping-factor SS amp for the lows. Much more logical that way.Arthur
Why do no audio enthusiasts use McIntosh?
Hey Gregpen - great post. I totally agree. Enjoy the music!
more reliable amp: tube or solid state class A
If I understand your question correctly, as an EE, my vote goes to the tube amp. Tubes are the hot parts of the amp and are outside the "box" in most cases. Heatsinks will invariably heat the amp and the capacitors inside it which will not be good...
Preamp with lots of outputs?
All the McIntosh preamps have 4 sets of outputs, two of which can be switched independently. Great feature, especially for biamping.Arthur
bi-amp with a tube amp and SS
I do it and love it. You have to be able to modify the gain on one of the amps so you can match their output levels. Power output doesn't factor in - only the input sensitivity does (gain will be fixed once set). If you can find two amps with the ...
Speaker Cables for JM Labs Electra 936?
I have 926s. I think he can't go wrong with Cardas speaker cables - Golden Reference in particular being an excellent choice. I however use MIT and love them - they aren't bright at all and allow microdynamics to develop more fully than other cabl...
Room size and floor standing speakers
Hi Peter. JM Lab is a great choice (they prefer to be called "Focal" these days). If you don't want a sub, for a room that size and the possibility of the long wall positioning, I think the Divas would be perfect. The Divas love having some room t...
Small bookshelfs that reach 42 hz
Dynaudio Contour S1.4 gets my vote. If it is just out of your budget, check out the Dynaudio Focus 140.
wanted: preamp with bass equalization
Check out a McIntosh C46 or C42 preamp. They are all analog - no digital circuits - and sound fantastic. Their EQ is extremely well made with bass controls that are in just the right spots. I have a C42 and have not been able to detect any real co...
High end stores closing do you really care
I think there is no substitute for a good brick and mortar dealer. It is too bad they are disappearing in the USA. At least they are becoming more popular in Europe! Everytime I travel in Europe, I get to discover tons of gear that I would never g...
Best Pre-Amp/Amp for Focal JMLab electra 920
Tube amps with 920s won't work well IMO. They are too tough a load unless you only listen at low volumes. I can't think of a good tube amp, moderately priced, that will control those big woofers well. The 926s have a lot less treble than the 920s a...
