HDCD question.....
Actually, in the mid-'90s, I had an Audio Research transport that would not pass the HDCD signal to my Theta DAC. My ARC dealer said it was a deliberate design decision on the part of ARC. I replaced it with a Classe transport, which worked just f...
Audio Research vt100mkll question
Still, the previous owner may at some point have used the 6h30 tube (or done something else equally stupid) and damaged the amp. I'd be very suspicious. I recommend that you send it to ARC -- or someone familiar with the amp -- to make sure everyt...
Audio Research vt100mkll question
Myron: Please tell us. What did Leonard say?
Subwoofer Recommendations for Audiophile Monitors
Lanceo: Please re-read my post about the new B (Britannia) series REL subs, which indeed are available. Statement Audio in Knoxville, Tenn., has sold several during the last few months. They start at $1,995 retail and are A LOT SMALLER than the ST...
Subwoofer Recommendations for Audiophile Monitors
For a two-channel system, you might consider the new REL subs, which are a bit smaller and offer better performance than the ST series. I had a Stadium III for a few years and bought a B1 a few months ago. I haven't heard everything, but I think t...
Audio Research vt100mkll question
The VT100MKII is not designed to be used with the 6H30 tube. There's a good chance you've damaged the amp by using those tubes in that amp. Also, if memory serves me correctly, the MKII version added a toggle switch to go between RCA and XLR input...
Review: Great Northern Sound Co. Wadia 860 CD Player
Bombaywalla: I bought a Wadia 861 basic about a year and a half ago, and, after a lot of thought, I decided to take the plunge and send it to Steve for the Reference upgrade. I just got it back a few days ago, so it's not even close to being burne...
Wadia still in business?
For non-warranty repairs (or for upgrades), there's always Great Northern Sound Co. Steve Huntley is lightning fast at responding to inquiries and he has built up a stellar reputation for honesty and technical prowess.
Dunlavy SC-IVa Set up help
Danlib1: Please enlighten us.I know a lot of audiophiles who liked the sound of Dunlavy speakers but hated the fact they were so big. And that's why they wouldn't buy them. And some people thought they looked too plain and wanted something "fancie...
Dunlavy SC-IVa Set up help
Somehow, I don't think John Dunlavy cared much about cosmetic appeal. That's one reason Dunlavy is out of business. And the owners manuals for his speakers sure don't suggest anything like what Sean is advocating.Even in my previous house, with a ...
Dunlavy SC-IVa Set up help
I wonder what John Dunlavy or some of the people who used to work for Dunlavy (like Drew Rigby) would say about Sean's suggestions. My guess is that they would be horrified.I also wonder if Sean has ever owned the Dunlavy SC-IV/A. I have, and the ...
Power conditioner for Wadia
I'm probably better off applying the money I'd spend on a power conditioner to have the Reference (not the Statement) upgrade at Great Northern Sound.I'd like to hear from any Wadia 861 (or other Wadia CD players) owners who have had this upgrade ...
Power conditioner for Wadia
Thanks for all of your suggestions. I forgot to mention that I do have a dedicated 20-amp circuit for my Audio Research VT100MKIII amp, plus I'm using PS Audio Power Ports for it and the Wadia.
Please Compare these mid 1990's SS amps.
Of those amps, it would be between the 400MKII and the Forte 4A. I'd go with the 400MKII, which was a fine amp in its day and is still one of the better solid-state amps. If you don't need 200 watts per channel, the Forte 4A would also be a good c...
Wadia Owner - with or without preamp
Thomasheisig: What are you basing this on? Have you experimented with the Wadia equipment? I notice that your system doesn't include any Wadia gear.
